Health Education and Improvement Wales (HEIW) is seeking an outstanding medical leader with a passion for education to take on the pivotal role of Medical Director. This is a rare opportunity to influence the future of the healthcare workforce in Wales at the highest level.

Main duties of the job

As Medical Director, you will hold a senior executive Board level position, with corporate responsibility for strategy, policy and delivery of HEIW's aims. You will lead nationally on the strategic direction and delivery of:

Postgraduate medical, dental, pharmacy and optometry education and training,

Workforce plans and transformation relating these professions

Appraisal and revalidation

You will work closely with our NHS partners, as well as professional bodies, regulators, Welsh Government and four nations colleagues.

You will also serve as the Responsible Officer for around 3,500 postgraduate doctors in training in Wales, with statutory responsibility for overseeing appraisal and performance monitoring, ensuring robust revalidation processes, and managing fitness to practise concerns in collaboration with employers and the GMC.

Essential

  • Medically qualified with a background on Primary or Secondary care or Public Health.
  • Full specialist or GP registration with the General Medical Council
  • Licence to practise with GMC
  • Relevant Postgraduate medical qualifications.
  • Formal leadership and management training and development

Experience

  • Clinical experience within the NHS
  • Significant experience of leadership and strategic management at a senior level.
  • Extensive experience at a senior level of medical management and medical education in the NHS with a demonstrable track record of developing and leading effective teams
  • Demonstrable experience of leading and delivering transformational change.
  • Experience of dealing with a range of complex issues within a politically sensitive and multi stakeholder environment.
  • Understanding the complexities of health policy development at national level and how it translates to delivery at national, regional, and local levels
  • Applying recognised methodologies in, for example, quality improvement, health service leadership and health services research.
  • Experience of dealing with fitness to practice and performance issues
