NHS Wales - Pre-Registration Genetic Counsellor

Exciting opportunity to use your degree for patient and public benefit!

Earn a competitive salary and gain a Master's degree through a 3 year, full-time, fully funded, blended training programme.

Starting salary will be on the first point of Band 6 on a 3 year fixed term contract.

Applications are invited for a Pre-Registration Genetic Counsellor (Band 6) for the All Wales Medical Genomics Service (AWMGS). This is based out of the Institute of Medical Genetics at the University Hospital of Wales, Cardiff, Singleton Hospital in Swansea and Wrexham Maelor Hospital in Wrexham. The Cardiff site will be moving to Cardiff Edge, Coryton at the end of 2023.

The Clinical and Laboratory services merged to form the AWMGS in April 2019, together they provide the medical genomics service to the population of Wales. The AWMGS has hubs across Wales with Specialist Medical Geneticists and Genetic Counsellors providing genetic services in all the main hospitals throughout Wales. Together with Cardiff University, Wales Gene Park and the Welsh Government, the AWMGS are working to deliver the Welsh Government Genomics for Precision Medicine Strategy for patients within Wales. This is a highly exciting and innovative strategy with opportunities for staff, healthcare professionals, patients and the public across Wales.

Main duties of the job

There is one position available this year for a Pre-Registration Genetic Counsellor to undertake a three-year post-graduate training programme. The trainee is enrolled for a fully funded, part time vocational master's degree in Genetic and Genomic Counselling at Cardiff University.

The student will be required to rotate through other areas within the service, which will involve secondments at other locations. On completion of the fixed term appointment, prospects for permanent employment within Wales are excellent. For individuals with aptitude and commitment there are opportunities to progress through the career pathway of a Genetic Counsellor.

This is an excellent opportunity for an individual who is motivated to pursue a career within Wales.

*Please note, completion of this fixed term post and completion of the programme and MSc will not mean you are a registered genetic counsellor. It is anticipated that a further period of clinical experience and subsequent submission of a portfolio which meets all the relevant standards will be required in order to achieve registration.*

This post is fixed term for 3 years to meet the needs of the service.

About us

The successful applicant will attend Cardiff University for block teaching sessions and undertake distance learning as part of their MSc degree. The student will also have work-based learning and training where they will develop and apply their academic knowledge and skills in the NHS workplace. The work that is undertaken at AWMGS will fit around the study on the MSc degree.

The AWMGS includes the Clinical and Laboratory Genomics Services and is hosted by Cardiff & Vale University Health Board. The successful applicant will be expected to travel and spend time in all three bases of the AWMGS. AWMGS are a strategic partner within Genomics Partnership Wales (GPW). Further development in this area has resulted in funding for a new site in Cardiff Edge. With an anticipated relocation in 2023.

The University Hospital of Wales is the largest hospital in Wales, on the same site as the School of Medicine. It is well provided with academic and social facilities. Cardiff city centre, with its many amenities, is easily accessible by bike or public transport.
