Pharmaceutical Sciences - 2 posts

Transforming Access to Medicines is an NHS Wales programme to set up a shared Pharmacy Technical Service for Wales. As part of this programme we are looking to increase our number of trainees to support the transition of the existing service to the new model. The posts will be based in existing NHS units all of which hold a MHRA manufacturers specials (MS) license have on site Quality Control departments.

This post is fixed term for 3 years to meet the needs of the service.

Main duties of the job

Post 1: St Mary's Pharmaceutical Unit - Cardiff and Vale University Health Board

MHRA License covering

Non Sterile Manufacture - Oral Liquids, Capsules, Creams, Ointments and Gels, Suppositories, Pessaries and Enemas

Sterile manufacture - Terminally Sterilised Products (Injections, Infusions andTopicals)

Aseptic Products - Parenteral Nutrition, Chemotherapy products and CIVAs

Quality Assurance and Control - QC laboratory on site

Radiopharmacy - based in the Nuclear Medicine department, University Hospital of Wales.

Post 2: Pharmacy Technical Services & Radiopharmacy, Singleton & Morriston Hospitals, Swansea Bay University Health Board

  • MHRA licensed unit (Singleton) for aseptic manufacture of CIVAS. Unlicensed aseptic preparation of Parenteral Nutrition, Chemotherapy products and CIVAs.
  • Quality Assurance and Control laboratory at Singleton.
  • Hospital-based unlicensed aseptic preparation of Parenteral Nutrition and CIVAS (Morriston).
  • Radiopharmacy.

Each of the two sites would offer similar training programmes although the make up of the service does vary from site to site.

All of the sites will offer the opportunity to be trained in an environment committed to the delivery of high quality, patient focused pharmaceutical care and optimisation of medicines use.

During your programme we are happy to support your training in other NHS Wales units to provide you with a broad experience.

Essential

  • Applicants must have an honours degree (1st or 2.1) in a pure or applied science relevant to the specialism for which they are applying. Applicants with a relevant 2.2 degree will also be considered if they have an MSc or PhD in the specialism for which they are applying.
  • For all candidates evidence of research experience, e.g. in the form of a higher degree or equivalent evidence of scientific and academic capability, is considered desirable.

Scientific Skills Demonstrated in a work or study context

  • A committed in depth interest in Scientific Practice and its application to direct clinical care of patients in a clinical environment
  • Ability to design research investigations and experiments.
  • Ability to analyze and assess scientific, technical and medical literature.
  • Ability to make judgements, including clinical judgments involving facts or situations that impact on patients.
  • Have an understanding of quality control and management assurance in a science or work based context
  • Ability to develop proficiency in the performance of routine and complex techniques currently in use where they are training
  • Has an understanding of the role of their chosen specialism in healthcare and disease and its application in a healthcare setting.
  • Good IT skills and knowledge of common computing packages for word processing, spreadsheets, presentation packages and databases.
