Starting salary will be on the first point of Band 6 on a 3 year fixed term contract.

The NHS in Wales is offering a salaried post-graduate training post for a high calibre science graduate who is passionate about science and its role in patient care in the field of Nuclear Medicine Physics.

Successful candidates will be employed by an NHS Wales organisation for the duration of their three-year post-graduate Clinical Science STP training programme.

In addition to undertaking their Nuclear Medicine specialism, trainees will initially rotate through each of the Medical Physics areas: Nuclear Medicine, Radiation Safety and Diagnostic Radiology, Imaging with Non-Ionising Radiation and Radiotherapy. Trainees will also undertake a fully-funded part-time accredited MSc degree in Clinical Science (Medical Physics), at Swansea University. Further details are available from:

Main duties of the job

North Wales - Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board - 1 post

The North Wales trainee will be based in the Medical Physics Department at Glan Clwyd Hospital, Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board (BCUHB), which provides a wide range of services including radiotherapy physics, radiation physics, radioisotopes, clinical engineering and electro biomedical engineering (EBME). BCUHB is the largest health organisation in Wales, providing a full range of health and hospital services for a population of around 700,000 across North Wales. Nuclear medicine services currently include imaging - with 3 x SPECT-CT scanners and a mobile PET-CT scanner, non-imaging tests, and therapy - with I-131 and Ra-223. There are plans for consolidation of nuclear medicine imaging, including the acquisition of a fixed PET-CT scanner, and possible development of other therapies, including Lu177-PSMA, within the timeframe of the training post.

Cardiff Training Consortium - 2 posts

The Cardiff trainees will be hosted in the Nuclear Medicine Department at Velindre Cancer Centre, which provides a comprehensive range of procedures; therapy services of I-131 and Ra-223, with the developments of Lu-177 on the horizon, as well as a range of imaging and non-imaging procedures. The training post is offered as a training consortium with Cardiff and Vale UHB and also the Positron Emission Tomography Imaging Centre, at Cardiff University. The trainees will experience the full range of training opportunities presented by each of the departments.

The ability to speak Welsh is desirable for this post; Welsh and/or English speakers are equally welcome to apply.

This post is fixed term for 3 years to meet the needs of the service.

About us

Swansea - 1 post

The Swansea trainee will be hosted in the Nuclear Medicine Department at Singleton Hospital, Swansea, which is part of the Department of Medical Physics and Clinical Engineering. This department provides an extensive Nuclear Medicine imaging (Oncology, Cardiology, Endocrinology etc.) service, utilising state-of-the art SPECT-CT equipment. The Nuclear Medicine department coordinates a mobile PET-CT service at present but has well developed plans to open a static PET-CT service in 2024. The Radionuclide Therapy service is also due for expansion to incorporate Lu-177 based radiopharmaceuticals. Regional Radiopharmacy and Bone Densitometry services are hosted locally. The trainee will be able to gain a broad experience in all areas of Nuclear Medicine at this Health Board.
