Salary range is Band 6 on a 3-year fixed term contract.

Applications are invited for a Trainee Clinical Scientist (band 6) position in Clinical Informatics at the NHS Wales Delivery Unit (becoming part of the NHS Wales Executive from April 2023). The host site is currently Swansea Bay University Health Board and it is intended to be hosted by Public Health Wales from April 2023. The post will be hybrid working, with the office based in Pencoed, near Bridgend.

Clinical Informatics involves providing support to ensure that health data is used efficiently and to required standards. Vast amounts of data and information are generated in the NHS and advances in health data utilisation will help to provide the highest quality patient care and outcomes. This HEIW (Health Education and Improvement Wales) fully funded programme is equivalent to that of the STP programme in England. Main duties of the job

You will have work-based learning and training where you develop and apply your academic knowledge and skills in the NHS workplace. There are excellent opportunities to develop your professional practice through gaining knowledge and understanding of healthcare science and its contribution to patient care, patient safety, service delivery, research and innovation. Trainees may be required to rotate, which may involve secondments at other locations, within Wales for short periods of time.

You will also be enrolled on a fully funded part-time vocational master's degree in the chosen specialism (Clinical Informatics). The successful candidates will either travel to the University for block teaching sessions or undertake learning remotely, in line with the University's teaching requirements.

Working closely with Health and Care organisations across Wales, you will join an engaged and innovative team that is passionate about delivering value within Wales. Candidates will need a good grounding in information analysis and computing, as well as an understanding of health care. We are looking for high calibre science/IT/maths/engineering graduates who are passionate about health data and its role in patient care

This post is fixed term for 3 years to meet the needs of the service.

  • Applicants must have an honours degree (1st or 2.1) in a pure or applied science relevant to the specialism for which they are applying. Applicants with a relevant 2.2 degree will also be considered if they have an MSc or PhD in the specialism for which they are applying.

  • Have an understanding of quality control and management assurance in a science or work based context
  • Ability to develop proficiency in the performance of routine and complex techniques currently in use where they are training
