Job summary
Health Courier Services intend to appoint one person to this vacancy however there will be an opportunity for a second person to also complete the required Blue Light Response training which will be determined following the interview process.
NHS Wales Shared Services Partnership provides Clinical Logistics Transport Services across all Health Boards in Wales via its Health Courier Service, and is seeking a Blue Light Response Driver to join this service based in the Cardiff area, serving South Wales.
On average, the service sorts (via its own mail sorting hubs), delivers and collects over 120,000 items of mail/medical notes per week, and transports in excess of 5 million movements of samples of Blood Products and Pathology in accordance with Accord Dangereux Routier, Good Manufacturing Practice & legislative requirements per year.
Main duties of the job
The post holder will primarily be responsible for the transport/replenishment of NHS Pathology, Blood, secure and non-secure stationery and other stock items distributed to primary health care sites (Hospitals, GPs, pharmacies, opticians, dental surgeries) and its subsequent delivery to their healthcare premises across Wales. The 24/7 driver will usually deal with the ad hoc/urgent requests or requests that require a higher grade of response i.e. Blue Light, ADR or Specialist Chemotherapy
The post holder will be required to respond efficiently to instructions from HCS supervisory staff or an appropriate Control Centre, and carry out the safe, secure collection, transportation and delivery of a range of Blood Products, pathology, goods and items between GP surgeries, patients' homes, hospitals and other NHS establishments, as required. The work undertaken involves daily scheduled and non-scheduled work, and the duties are carried out in accordance with the HCS operating procedures, planned schedules and the Code of Conduct and Standards of Professional Behaviour.
This position will function as a relief role within the primary 24/7 rota and will also provide relief for our CAVUHB schedules.

During the interview process all candidates will be required to undertake an initial driving assessment (at normal road speed) with a qualified Advanced Driving Instructor (ADI) who will assess each candidates suitability for progressing to completing a Standard Response Driving Qualification. The outcome of the initial assessment, which will assess attitude, awareness around vehicle preparation, vehicle control and driving safely, will form part of the overall interview criteria.
In order to be certified as a Blue Light Response Driver, the successful candidate will have to agree to the terms and conditions set out in the NWSSP Study Leave Procedure, participate in a 2 week intensive driving course funded by NWSSP and pass the final assessment. Failure to successfully pass the course could result in the offer of employment being withdrawn.
