Job summary
The Director
of Nursing reports to the Director of Operations and works alongside the
Medical Director in being responsible and accountable for clinical services, governance,
and safeguarding, for all insourcing provision.
The
Director of Nursing provides subject matter expertise to assure patient safety
and clinical risk management, with a key focus on patient experience, clinical
effectiveness, and staff experience.
We are
looking for a highly motivated nurse leader, with a passion for leading and
managing high performing teams to deliver excellence in patient care.
Main duties of the job
Be
accountable for governance and safeguarding to
give assurance of impeccable standards in clinical service provision, patient
safety, clinical leadership, and response to incidents.
Chair the
Governance Committee and oversee governance and safeguarding including
investigations and responses to complaints and clinical incidents.
Act as
nursing lead and SME, including
advice and input to operational planning of new contracts, to ensure that they
are assessed, staffed, implemented, and executed successfully.
Provide a
visible presence across specialities, the company,
and with customers, to assure robust and supportive
clinical leadership, which strives to identify opportunities for CPD, shared
learning and improvement.
Lead
recruitment functions by maintaining accountability for interview and
approval of all non-doctor grade clinicians, delegated to speciality
lead nurses as appropriate.
Provide line-management
and leadership to speciality lead nurses to
ensure that high standards of care are delivered at all times.
Develop and
maintain robust administrative and operational processes to assure high
standards of care delivery and clinician support. Proactively respond to feedback to support process change to ensure a continuously improving model of
service delivery.
Act as a
clinical focal point for as a key operational leader and
manager, advocate for excellence across specialities and in patient care
and service delivery.

Role model clinical
leadership through line management and mentoring of speciality lead nurses,
supporting a culture of growth and development for clinical staff across specialities.
Delegate accountability and responsibility as appropriate, to lead nurses and
site Nurses in Charge (NICs), for the delivery of compassionate, collaborative,
patient focussed clinical care. Empower lead nurses to support and identify
staff who are able to take on a wider range of clinical skills, and then ensure
that adequate resources are available to enable this e.g. HCAs, Nursing
Assistants, Specialist Nurses.
Be
accountable for clinical audit across specialities, including routine audit as
part of a continuous monitoring of service standards, and ad hoc audits in
response to incidents and emergent issues.
Establish and
nurture solid working relationships with NHS partner staff and management, to
assure quality of service provision to meet the needs of the customer, and in
collaboration with the Director of Operations.
Be
responsible for developing nursing staff knowledge, skills and competencies
through shared learning. Ensure the development of nursing practice is in line
with best practice and up-to-date evidence. Develop and encourage effective
learning environment for all staff.
Ensure
seamless patient care through the development of protocols, pathways, and
standard operating procedures through liaison with other members of the operational
and clinical management teams, and NHS partners. Develop and implement
up-to-date, evidence-based standards of care, supported by lead nurses, and in
collaboration with the Director of Operations and Medical Director.
Facilitate monthly
one-to-one meetings with speciality lead nurses. Attend weekly meetings with
the Director of Operations and Medical Director to ensure clear communication
and smooth delivery of clinical services, along with facilitating MDT decision
making for incident and complaint response and management.
Maintain
own clinical portfolio (including clinical practice as appropriate) to maintain
NMC registration and suitability for revalidation. Act as lead for revalidation
of lead nurses if required.
Support the
Director of Operations in reviewing contract performance data, including
clinical outcomes and patient feedback, and implementing processes for service
improvement and enhanced clinical outcomes. Ensure improved practice and
processes are communicated and implemented across specialities, and monitor
outcomes.
Be
accountable for provision of appropriately trained, competent, and compliant
clinical staff across specialities and contracts, through oversight of clinical
recruitment and ensuring correct process throughout recruitment and compliance pipeline.
Maintain ownership, delegated as appropriate, of clinical induction of all
staff to ensure high quality, patient centred care provision.
Monitor,
manage and mitigate clinical risk, undertaking formal and dynamic risk assessments
as appropriate, in collaboration with Director of Operations and Medical
Director.
Advise
Director of Operations and Head of Business Development, supported by lead
nurses, on implementation of new
clinical activity, to ensure appropriate staffing templates and skill mix for
safe and effective service delivery. Review staffing and skill mix of contracts
periodically to ensure ongoing clinical effectiveness and patient safety.
Undertake
site visits, alongside Business Development and Director of Operations, or
delegate to an appropriate lead nurse, for new contracts. Set staffing
templates and skill mix requirements to ensure optimal care for patients,
informing Director of Operations and Business Development to ensure appropriate
contractual adjustments are made prior to contract implementation.
Work with
the Head of Recruitment and Clinical Coordination to map the nursing workforce
requirements, including modelling demand and supply forecasting of future
activity, and supporting the recruitment process to ensure gaps are filled with
the correct quality of nursing staff.
Be
accountable for performance management of clinical staff, owning the process
for appraisal, monitoring, review, and where appropriate imposing sanctions
(including restrictions of activity or do not book processes) in response to
incidents, complaints, or changes in competence or compliance profiles.
Ensure all
members of the clinical workforce have access to, understand, and comply with
all relevant company policies, and conduct themselves as advocates and
representatives of the business, delivering excellence in patient care.
Facilitate
lead nurse attendance at launch weekends of all new contracts, and periodically
throughout contracts to provide visible and supportive clinical leadership.
Remain visible and available to all clinical teams across contracts as the
clinical representative of company management, and as the as the focal point
for all clinical standards.
Promote,
enforce, and support adherence to standards of conduct and behaviour of all
clinical staff, and support lead nurses in performance management of all
clinicians within their specialities.
As
Governance and Safeguarding lead, remain accountable for, and support the
Governance Manger in managing all complaints and incidents in line with company
policies and SLAs. Maintain communication with NHS partner governance teams and
ensure a culture of communication and shared learning. Be responsible for Duty
of Candour on behalf of the company.
