Main duties of the job

The post holder will work in partnership with the Director of Nursing and Quality and the Professional practice Development to manage the development and ongoing learning of Trainee Advanced Practitioners, Nurse Practitioners, Emergency Care Practitioners, Associate Nurse Practitioners, Paramedic Practitioners, Pharmacists, Medical Colleagues and Health Care Assistants.

This role has been created with the specific requirement to support the development of practitioners within the evolving Urgent Treatment Centre's across the organisation. The candidate must an extensive knowledge of skills relevant to this environment, including but not limited to minor injuries and urgent care presentations and diagnosis, e.g. interpretation of bloods, ECGs, and X-rays.

The Advanced Clinical Trainer is responsible for the development and delivery of comprehensive advanced clinical training packages to maintain a motivated and skilled workforce in order to fulfil the organisational need. It is expected that the Advanced Clinical Trainer will also hold a clinical contract for DHU Healthcare.

Job responsibilities

  • To develop clinical education programmes demonstrating knowledge, skill and understanding of advanced clinical assessment. The advanced clinical trainer will have this level of skill in order to deliver to the standard required.
  • Exhibit advanced theoretical and practical knowledge of the advanced role. Knowledge must be underpinned by Advanced Practice Masters level education.
  • In conjunction with the Deputy Director of Nursing and Quality, Professional Practice Development Manager and Head of Clinical Services, identify training and development needs within DHU Healthcare through appraisal or as new contracts are secured by the organisation.
  • Use audit outcomes to direct training.
  • Ensure that training is planned as a result of audit outcomes.
  • Learning needs of individuals which are identified by the Deputy Director of Nursing, Professional Practice Development Manager and Head of Clinical Services must structure ongoing learning developing individual learning plans as necessary.
  • Proactively use learning outcomes from clinical or untoward incidents and assess/develop educational training plans as required.
  • Develop training and development strategies to comply with national developments in Advanced Practice, prescribing or National Guidelines regarding disease and disease management.
  • Although not a budget holder, consider the costs of planned programmes and keep within budgets as well as assessing the return on investment of any training within a development programme.
  • Devise and produce training materials for in-house training, assessments and re-validation of skills employing flexibility and variation of teaming techniques to suit different learning styles.
  • Develop methods to evaluate all training and development programmes delivered.
  • Amend and revise programmes as necessary, in order to adapt to the changes that occur in the work environment.
  • Prepare a wide variety of written materials (e.g. reports, memos and letters) for the purpose of documenting activities, providing written reference, and/or conveying information.
  • To participate in quality improvement within the organisation
  • To assess and evaluate outcomes of practice, service intervention and treatment and identifies any short falls in service reporting to relevant managers.
  • To ensure the requirements of Health and Safety legislation appropriate EU Directives and COSHH regulations are maintained.
  • To work within the regulatory requirements, codes and guidance of appropriate professional regulatory bodies/ councils.
  • To maintain professional and clinical competence through mechanisms of continuing own professional development.
  • To act in such a manner at all times to promote confidence and public trust and uphold the reputation and image of DHU Healthcare.
  • Comply with the requirements of strict confidentiality and sensitivity regarding staff training.
  • Have a leading role in ensuring that clinical practice changes as a result of nursing research.

  • Substantial autonomous practice experience supported by the appropriate post Advanced Practice qualification at Masters level.
  • Evidence of substantial experience using advanced clinical examination & assessment skills within practice supported by the appropriate post registration Masters qualification.
  • Substantial autonomous, advanced practice working and multi-professional team working.
  • Can show evidence of using advanced physical examination and assessment skills in practice.
  • Can demonstrate a broad and sound knowledge of complex and common conditions in urgent care in both adults and children.
  • Has experience in nurse led clinics or emergency care center's, out of hours facilities or walk in center's.
