Job summary

We have an exciting opportunity for an experienced Biomedical Scientist to join our Red Cell Immunohaematology (RCI) Department. Our laboratory provides complex diagnostic and blood donation selection activities to hospital transfusion laboratories across the NHS.

You'll join our friendly team and play an important role performing, analysing, interpreting, documenting and reporting specialist/complex investigations in the RCI laboratory. You will also supervise colleagues in the laboratory and take a leading role in the development and maintenance of scientific and technical expertise We will provide you with extensive induction and training and ongoing support in this role to develop your specialist skills and scientific education. Our focus is on using scientific skills and knowledge to solve problems in a service which is in great demand.

As a HCPC registered Biomedical Scientist with relevant post registration experience, you will have an MSc, FIBMS or equivalent in transfusion / transplantation or relevant science or postgraduate qualification e.g. IBMS Higher Specialist Diploma and relevant experience.

Main duties of the job

In this role as a HCPC registered Biomedical Scientist in Red Cell Immunohaematology (RCI), you will be required to undertake a range of scientific procedures using specialist scientific knowledge, performing automated and manual investigations. Your responsibilites will include :-

  • Analysing, interpreting, validating, transmitting and reporting the results of routine and complex investigations
  • Communicating complex information, including technical and scientific analysis, verbally, in writing and electronically to work colleagues and clinical or medical staff
  • Providing specialist advice to the centre, clusters of centres and hospitals in the region in own area of expertise
  • Undertaking specialist training to new members of the team and acting as mentor to less experienced colleagues
  • Daily allocation of workload and supervision of colleagues, ensuring high standards and meeting regulatory and quality requirements for patient safety which is the main focus of all work performed
  • You will be required to participate in the shift rota and on call rotas and to provide cover during operational emergencies.
