Job summary
The Molecular Diagnostics department is looking to recruit a pro-active, enthusiastic, and highly motivated SHTO to support scientific staff in the day to day running of the laboratory. In this role youll undertake detailed laboratory work and provide vital support to qualified scientific staff. Specifically, that means preparing samples for testing or storage, performing analytical tests, operating analysers, and carrying out basic maintenance on equipment. Some laboratory clerical work and consumable ordering will also be required. Youll also be on hand to deal with queries from hospitals, other departments, medical staff, or visitors and to assist in the training and development of other support staff. This position demands great team working and organisational skills, attention to detail and the ability to precisely follow written and verbal instructions. Good communication skills are essential. The working pattern for this role is 37.5 hours/ 5 days per week. You will be required to work a shift system which operates between the hours of 7:00 to 18:00, Monday to Saturday (exact working hours to be discussed with the successful candidates).
Main duties of the job
You will be required to perform a range of clerical, scientific and technical activities related to the preparation, testing and storage of blood from our patients, with the support of the team You will operate analysers and carry out basic maintenance on equipment You will be responsible for the support and training of new and less experienced staff You will be required to undertake precise repetitive manipulation of equipment and blood samples and carry out routine tasks on a regular basis You will be required to monitor and order stock, consumable and reagents You will be required to handle blood samples and a range of equipment The role will require you to work between the hours of 7am to 6pm You will be required to manually handle equipment on a daily basis weighing up to 13 kgs, with or without mechanical aids, with appropriate training
