Job summary

The Blood Stocks Management Scheme was established to understand and improve blood inventory management across the blood supply chain and has the scope to transform the capabilities of UK blood services and hospitals. As an integral part of NHS Blood and Transplant, this team champion best practice at the highest levels and if successful you could be at the heart of this work, seeing your contribution making a tangible impact on a nationwide scale. You will play an essential role in promoting good inventory management in both blood services and hospitals. Helping us ensure blood transfusion needs are being met, you will come up with bold initiatives to optimise the use of donated blood components and improve the supply chain. Travelling to various sites to share your knowledge, you will be committed to reducing wastage, and you will use the data provided by your team to evaluate and interpret detailed information and make recommendations based on a range of options.

You will help manage the BSMS data analyst team, and you will lead by example as you challenge traditional knowledge verbally and in compelling reports.

Main duties of the job

In this role, you will support the Blood Stocks Management Scheme (BSMS) manager as an inventory specialist, and a subject matter expert in blood supply chain management for blood services and hospitals to effect improvements to end-to-end blood supply inventory. Your responsibilities include:

  • Partnering with UK hospitals, blood services and external agencies, to ensure patients transfusion needs are met through an effective and efficient end to end blood supply chain.
  • Leading major initiatives in blood supply management to develop novel ways to improve the supply chain and optimise the use of donated blood components to reduce or eliminate wastage in the system and improve transfusion care of patients.
  • Evaluating and interpreting highly complex detailed information identifying and translating it into an understandable format for all users of the BSMS.
  • Conveying and disseminating complex and challenging ideas in different ways such as in in visually engaging summary reports and in transfusion journal publications.
  • Ensuring content on BSMS website is updated, ensuring all educational material is current and that the website is the preferred resource for blood supply chain information in the UK.
  • Managing the BSMS data analyst team including regular performance reviews and deputising for BSMS manager as required.

  • MSc in transfusion/transplant or relevant subject OR equivalent highly specialist knowledge gained by examination of a professional body e.g. FIBMS, BBTS, BSHI or equivalent specialist experience.
  • Health and Care Professional Council (HCPC) registered Biomedical Scientist (which must be maintained).
  • Demonstrates commitment to own continued professional development (CPD).

Experience

  • Experience and understanding of the blood supply process and stock management practises in blood services and hospitals. This includes understanding the challenges within a hospital and the complex processes from donor to validation.
  • Experience of presenting complex information in a variety of formats (including verbal presentation and report writing) to a wide range of audiences.
  • Current and extensive knowledge of transfusion science and the ability to discuss current clinical transfusion problems with laboratory staff.
  • Experience of working with Information Technology using Microsoft Office packages (Word, Excel and PowerPoint).
