Job summary

At NHS Blood & Transplant (NHSBT) we are continually developing our service to enable us to save and improve more lives every day and our Patient Blood Management team is no exception. Patient Blood Management is a multidisciplinary, evidence-based approach to optimising the care of patients who might need blood transfusion.

We build on successes of the Department of Health Better Blood Transfusion initiatives and encompass measures to avoid transfusion such as anaemia management, cell salvage and the use of anti-fibrinolyic drugs to reduce bleeding. Always ensuring patient centred care.

This senior nursing or scientific post will play a key role in supporting clinical colleagues in hospitals and primary care settings to implement and deliver Patient Blood Management.

Main duties of the job

The overall aim of this role is to support hospitals to ensure that patients receive the optimal treatment, and that avoidable, inappropriate use of blood and blood components is reduced.

You will be joining NHSBT to be a key player in how we can further positively impact patient lives through Patient Blood Management and looking beyond the remit of hospital settings. You will play a key role in supporting clinical colleagues to implement and deliver Patient Blood Management initiatives, making a significant contribution to reducing avoidable transfusion and promoting alternatives, and where this is not possible, enhancing safe and effective transfusion practice.

You will be responsible for leading activities designed to support Patient Blood Management. This will include provision of an on-going programme of support, education, audit, research and specialist transfusion advice. By building relationships with key individuals involved in transfusion, you will ensure a co-ordinated approach to improving clinical practice locally, regionally, and nationally.

You will have the opportunity to scope out new ways of working, lead national projects and explore innovative ways of helping to embed PBM into hospitals. You will be required to travel and spend time away from base, which will involve working irregular hours at times and overnight stays when required, with prior notice.

It takes all types of people to deliver the kind of service that saves and improves lives. At NHS Blood and Transplant, youll join a team of more than 6,000 people who are making a genuine difference to communities, families, friends, relatives and more across the UK.
