Job summary

The purpose of the post is to lead and support the clinical work and goals of the Plasma for Medicine and Donor Medical Teams and provide wider clinical input into the national working of the Transfusion, Blood Supply, and Donor Experience Directorates. The incumbent will be a member of the Transfusion Senior Leadership and Management Team and will have demonstrable clinical leadership and management skills.

Main duties of the job

The post-holder will:

  • Be part of the team of health care professionals providing and leading clinical services to blood donors and blood components, primarily in the Blood Supply and Plasma Directorates and also nationally with the devolved UK blood services.
  • Contribute to the education strategy, development and oversight of the Specialty and Associate Specialist (SAS) doctors in the Donor Medicine team.
  • Make an active contribution to the development of national clinical policy in respect of donor health and donor selection guidance.
  • Make an active contribution to blood component development and guidelines at a national level.
  • Make an active contribution to the development of new plasma for medicine products. advise on red cell Immuno-haematology strategy in donor blood typing and advise on appropriate blood and plasma products for clinical practice.
  • Participate in the high-level medical director on-call rota including out of hours.
  • Organise/participate in teaching and training for the multidisciplinary team of medical trainees, postgraduate doctors, nurses, and scientific staff.
  • Understand the NHSBT Clinical Governance frameworks and ensure that they are adhered to in all the clinical areas for which they have responsibility.
  • Participate in Continuing Professional Development contribute to and, where appropriate, take the lead in a systematic programme of clinical audit, including regionally and nationally.

  • licence to practise) with the General Medical Council (GMC) (or eligible for registration within six months of interview
  • Applicants that are UK trained, must ALSO be a holder of a Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT), or be within six months of award of CCT by date of interview.
  • Applicants that are non-UK trained, will be required to show evidence of equivalence to the UK CCT
