Job summary
The role of the SNOD is a varied and multi-faceted role that requires a high level of experience and expertise. The aim is to maximise the potential for organ donation whilst providing excellent care for donors and their families. A 21-week training programme will be in place on commencement in post which will be made up of 5-day blocks of classroom training interspersed with clinical placements of 4 weeks duration within the regional team. Classroom training weeks will be residential and there will be a requirement for the achievement of set competencies during the clinical weeks. This unique role provides the senior nurse the opportunity to develop themselves, both as part of a regional team and as an individual autonomous practitioner. This essential role will impact on all stages of the donation process and ultimately in the number of life saving transplants and as such is a rewarding and satisfying role.
Main duties of the job
You will play a key role in saving and improving lives through being an ambassador for our services and be a central point for medical teams to help deliver and facilitate a successful organ and tissue donation process. You will have the opportunity to help patients and families and unite team to deliver life-saving services. Your responsibilities will include: Using your clinical skills and experience to ensure the safety of our donors and recipients. Coordinating the theatre process to ensure a safe and effective retrieval of organs and tissues. Responding to referring hospitals to provide advice, information, and support. Undertaking patient assessment and screening to identify potential donors. Communicating with hospital colleagues to facilitate the organ donation conversation with families. Advising on interventions in the appropriate clinical management of the potential donor. Developing key relationships with hospital colleagues to ensure that no opportunity for donation is missed. Acting as an Ambassador to promote organ donation. You will be required to travel and spend time away from base, which will involve working irregular hours and overnight stays when required, with prior notice
