Job summary
We have an exciting opportunity for a Biomedical Laboratory Assistant to join our Histocompatibility and Immunogenetics Laboratory. We carry out testing for renal and stem cell transplantation for NHS teaching Hospitals in Sheffield, Manchester, Nottingham and Leicester. We are also a supra regional centre involved in the provision of HLA selected platelets and immunogenetic diagnostic testing to many hospitals in the Midlands and North of England. We have recently moved to the new purpose built centre with a high standard of laboratory and other facilities.
Join us and youll play a key role in supporting the laboratory in providing diagnostic services to hospitals and transplant centres. The person appointed will support all activities of the laboratory including, sample reception, DNA extraction, retrieval from archive of samples for testing, the preparation of reagents, use of laboratory equipment and analysers, decontamination procedures and general laboratory maintenance.
Main duties of the job
You will be required to perform a range of routine and non routine tasks linked to the HLA testing of organ and stem cell donors and patients with the support of your supervisor and other team members
You will be required to undertake precise repetitive manipulation of blood samples and carry out routine laboratory tasks on a regular basis with strict adherence to Standard Operating Procedures
You must be able to accurately recognise and maintain patient and donor unique sample identification throughout processes
You will be required to handle blood samples and a range of laboratory equipment and analysers
You will be required to manually handle equipment on a daily basis weighing up to 13 kgs, with or without mechanical aids, with appropriate training
