Job summary

This is an exciting role in the new HAV/B19 Testing lab. Our Testing laboratories carry out large-scale screening for HAV/B19 using sophisticated, automated equipment. We are looking for a Biomedical Scientist (Band 7) with specialist knowledge in diagnostic/testing laboratory work. You will have a specialist qualification in Transfusion/Transplantation Science. You will be able to perform, analyse, interpret, both routine and complex testing or diagnostic investigations. The successful applicant for this senior BMS post will be responsible for managing a team to provide technical leadership for the department. You will act as a mentor positively influencing the team and acting as their day-to-day front-line manager embracing the duties this position requires.

Main duties of the job

In this role you will be required to: perform, analyse, interpret, document and report routine and complex testing investigations manage the day to day activities of one or more teams in the laboratory and take responsibility for the standard of work and the quality of the results produced provide technical leadership and will make a significant contribution towards the quality management of the section allocated to you train Healthcare Scientist staff and act as a mentor take on some of the duties of the Laboratory Manager in their absence, as required, and will act as a mentor for all laboratory staff and contribute to their training You may be required to work weekends and Bank Holidays in times of operational difficulty, with suitable prior notice.

Essential

  • Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) registered Biomedical Scientist.
  • MSc or equivalent relevant experience equivalent to Masters level OR
  • Equivalent higher specialist knowledge gained by examination of a professional body or evidenced by relevant post graduate study/qualifications and experience
  • Management qualification or evidence of management training and experience.
  • Committed to continued learning & development and willing to undertake additional qualifications relevant to the post and work of the laboratory
  • Demonstrate commitment to own Continued Professional Development (CPD)

Experience

Essential

  • Extensive experience in working in a diagnostic/testing laboratory in depth knowledge of Transfusion science
  • In depth understanding of statutory and other relevant policies, standards and guidelines e.g. Good Manufacturing Practice, Good Laboratory Practice, Clinical Pathology/UKAS Accreditation and BCSH guidelines.
  • Experience of training and mentoring staff
  • Experience of working with Information Technology using Microsoft Office packages (Word, Excel and PowerPoint)
