The Physician Associate (PA) is a healthcare professional who works under the supervision of a GP but is able to work autonomously within their scope of practice. The PA will provide care for patients including assessment, diagnosis, treatment, and management of acute and chronic conditions. This role is designed to support the GPs, help reduce their workload, and improve patient access to care.

Main duties of the job

Clinical Duties

  • Conduct patient consultations for undifferentiated and undiagnosed conditions.

  • Perform physical examinations, take medical histories, and formulate differential diagnoses.

  • Request and interpret diagnostic studies such as blood tests, imaging, and ECGs.

  • Develop and deliver appropriate treatment and management plans in collaboration with GPs.

  • Provide care for patients with acute minor illnesses and long-term chronic conditions.

  • Perform procedures such as wound care, joint injections, and ear irrigation within scope of practice.

  • Undertake home visits where appropriate and contribute to care plans for housebound patients.

  • Support the delivery of QOF (Quality and Outcomes Framework) and enhanced services targets.

  • Contribute to health promotion, disease prevention, and patient education initiatives.

  • Recognise and escalate cases outside of scope or requiring senior clinical input.

Administrative Duties

  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date patient records using the practice's clinical system (e.g., Vision, EMIS).

  • Participate in clinical audits, quality improvement projects, and significant event analyses.

  • Assist with the development of practice protocols and clinical guidelines.

  • Manage patient recall systems for chronic disease monitoring and reviews.

  • Support the practice in meeting CQC (Care Quality Commission) and NHS Wales standards.

Professional Responsibilities

  • Work in accordance with the Faculty of Physician Associates Code of Conduct and NHS Wales policies.

  • Participate in annual appraisals, supervision sessions, and continuing professional development (CPD).

  • Maintain registration with the Physician Associate Managed Voluntary Register (PAMVR) and revalidate as required.

  • Attend and actively participate in practice meetings, clinical reviews, and multidisciplinary team (MDT) discussions.

  • Undertake regular training and updates in areas such as safeguarding, infection control, and resuscitation.

  • Support the supervision and training of students, junior staff, or trainee PAs if applicable.
