We are looking for a Health Care Assistant with a Level 3 qualification in Health and Social Care to join our friendly practice team.

The successful applicant will be working under the nursing team, in accordance with surgery protocols and guidelines, and will be responsible for treatment room duties such as phlebotomy, blood pressure checks, performing ECG's, the administration of IM injections under PSD etc. Please see full job description for more information.

They will also be expected to participate in surgery clinical audits and will also be responsible for the stocking of clinical rooms and for the safe disposal of clinical waste.

Main duties of the job

In this role you will be working under the supervision of our Practice Nurse Team in accordance with the practices guidelines and protocols.

The post holder is part of the Primary Health Care Team and as such shares responsibility for treatment room and nursing related duties.

Our team is comprised of 3 GP partners, a Salaried GP, an Advanced Nurse Practitioner, 3 experienced practice nurses and 1 healthcare assistant, alongside good administrative support. We are also a training Practice and currently have an ST3 GP Trainee at the Practice.

Job responsibilities

Main Activities, Duties and Responsibilities

Phlebotomy duties

To take and, where appropriate, despatch laboratory specimens including blood, urine, swabs and other diagnostic tests as required by clinicians. Making sure they are ready for collection by the designated collection or ensuring appropriate storage if collection has been missed.

Taking ECGs and ensuing that reports have been reviewed by a GP.

Carrying out blood pressure checks and recording measurements in the clinical system.

To measure and record height, weight and BMI of patient.

To carry out part 1 diabetic checks, including diabetic foot checks.

To undertake basic wound care and suture, clip removal.

To administer IM injections under PSD, including but not limited to, B12, influenza, shingles, pneumonia etc.

To undertake spirometry testing, ensuring that reports are passed to a GP and recorded in the clinical system.

Ensuring that all clinical rooms are adequately stocked.

To empty all clinical waste bins and remove full sharp boxes from clinical rooms, and to ensure all waste is stored appropriately.

To support the nursing team in delivery of their services as required.

To maintain high standards of cleanliness and tidiness in line with the infection control policy and health and safety policy.

To undertake any additional duties as may be deemed necessary.

Other Terms

Probationary Period

There will be a six month period of mutual assessment, during which time the period of notice will be one week on either side. This probationary period may be extended at the discretion of the Practice.

Notice Period

Once the probationary period has been successfully completed, there will be a three month notice period of notice on either side to terminate the employment.

Annual Leave and Study Leave

Annual leave entitlement will be up to 33 days, pro rata, per year plus bank holidays, this is dependent on length of service.

Time off to attend relevant training courses and updates will be approved in line with the practice policy.

Hours of Work

Your hours of work will be agreed and detailed in your contract. The post holder will be expected to work the hours needed to fulfil the needs of the Practice, which might at times include working longer or unsociable hours.

Pension Scheme

Entrance into the NHS Pension Scheme is automatic unless the post holder selects to opt out of the scheme. This is contributory scheme by both employee and employer. There is no alternative scheme available.
