Welshpool Medical Practice is a forward thinking, two sited Practice, located on the Powys/Shropshire border.

Welshpool is a market town located within beautiful Mid Wales, within easy commuting distance to Oswestry, Shrewsbury and Ellesmere. Our main site is based in Welshpool, enveloped with a branch surgery nestled within the country village of Guilsfield.

We are a Dispensing Practice with a growing list size of 11,000 patients. As an Advanced Training Practice we offer opportunities to GP Registrars, Medical Students, Physician Associates and Student Nurses. We are proud to be an Inspectorate of Wales high achieving Practice.

We provide cover to our local Community Hospital with its inpatient beds and Minor Injury Unit. There is no requirement for Salaried Doctors to become involved in this aspect of our rota unless it was of interest to you.

Our Practice Team consists of seven GP Partners, 1 Salaried GP, 1 Retainer Salaried GP working with wonderful Advanced Nurse Practitioners, Pharmacist, Paramedic, Practice Nurses, Health Care Assistants, Management Team, Pharmacy Technicians, Dispensers, Receptionists and Administrators. We are appreciative of our close working relationship with our super Health Board colleagues who are located close to the Practice.

Job Responsibilities

As a member of the Practice Team you will be dealing with a wide range of presenting health care needs within a Primary Health Care setting.

You will be expected to undertake consultations in all clinical settings as directed during your paid clinical time. These consultations will cover the breath of General Medical Services and Enhanced Service obligations. You will be expected to support the Partners in providing such services as outlined in the GMS Contract and any other National, Directed or Local Enhanced Service agreed with Powys Teaching Health Board. A contribution to the success of the Practice achieving maximum QAIF points will form part of this role.

Clinical responsibilities in accordance with a timetable as mutually agreed will lend itself to a variety of duties including consultations with a blend of a telephone and face to face consultation approach. You will be expected to make professional, autonomous decisions in relation to presenting problems, assessing the health care needs of patients with undifferentiated and undiagnosed problems.

In general, the post holder will be expected to undertake all the normal duties and responsibilities associated with a GP working in Primary Care inclusive of routine administration work, checking and actioning of emails, checking an actioning of investigation results, referral letters, on call duty sessions working in partnership with the clinical team, medication queries and fit note requests

An opportunity to get involved in the care of our patients at Welshpool Hospital, by completed a ward round and clerking in of any admissions.

Attendance at our monthly multidisciplinary and gold standard framework palliative meetings.

Attendance at Practice Lunch time meeting on alternative weeks of a Monday or a Wednesday (optional).

You will be expected to maintain and keep good standards of clinical records at all times and to work within the Practices Prescribing Policy.

Contribution to the implementation of services

You will be expected to apply practice policies, standards and guidelines. Participate in an audit where possible.

Personal Professional Development

The post includes paid continuous Professional Development time in accordance with the BMA Salaried GP Contract. You will be expected to attend educational and training activities provided by the Practice and the Health Board as part of your CPD commitment.

Quality

You will be expected to strive to maintain quality within the practice and will alert other team members to issues of quality and risk; assess your own performance and take accountability for your own actions, either directly or under supervision; contribute to the effectiveness of the team by reflecting on own and team activities and make suggestions to improve and enhance the teams performance; work effectively with others agencies to meet patient needs and effectively manage your own time, workload and resources

Communication

You will recognise the importance of effective communication within the team and strive to communicate effectively with all team members including Powys Local Health Board professionals. Communicate effectively to patients, carers and recognise peoples needs for alternative methods of communication and respond accordingly.

Leave entitlement

Annual leave, study leave entitlement together with CPD time will be based on the standards outlined in the recommended BMA contract for salaried GPs and applied pro rota.

If you attend a Protected learning time session on your day off, then of course this would be allocated time back to you.

Within Powys we have quarterly Protected Learning time sessions whereby the practice is closed for half a day; our patients are covered by Shropdoc and the clinical team attend a learning afternoon at a nearby venue. Adhoc in house practice continuous professional development sessions. Attending any agreed upon ad hoc courses will complete the balance of your CPD time, in agreement with BMA guidelines and authorisation from the Partnership.

Registration

At all times during your period of employment you must be a fully registered GP with the GMC and be part of the Welsh Performers List.

Salary

You will be paid at the rate from £10,000 per session (based on experience), plus full medical defence indemnity costs

Outside activities and private practice

You may undertake private practice or other work, provided that it does not conflict with your job plan. Private work will not be permitted on the premises, unless with the written and prior permission of the partners. At no time will a private patient service appear to, or be represented as, a service provided by the Practice. You will indemnify the practice against all claims, complaints or other representation in this respect.

Confidentiality

You must adhere to the applicable GMC guidance on Patient Confidentiality. You must not use or disclose information about the Practices business activities which includes business plans, forecasts, performance, information related to research, future strategy, or any other sensitive or financial information concerning the affairs of the Practice or its partners or staff. The duty of confidence continues in perpetuity

Professional Indemnity

You are required to effect and maintain full registration with the GMC and to effect and maintain membership on an occurrence based basis with a recognised medical defence organisation commensurate with your responsibilities. You are also required to provide written proof and evidence of such registration and membership. The fees for this membership will be met by the Practice.

Period of notice

The agreed minimum period of notice by both sides shall be three months

Superannuation

The post is pensionable in the NHS Pension Scheme; your inclusion is automatic unless you choose to opt out.

Prohibited Acts

You must not hold yourself to be in partnership with the partners of the Practice, pledge the credit of the partnership, do anything to bring the reputation of the partnership into disrepute or publish any item which may purport to represent the practice or its views

Complaints

You must co-operate with the reasonable investigations of complaints made against you or the Practice. The obligation continues beyond the period of your employment. You will be allowed full access to records and resources and will be fully involved and informed regarding any complaint which involves you.

Appraisal/revalidation

Practitioners will be required to comply with the requirements for NHS appraisal and revalidation. You will have a personal appraisal every six months, which will provide the opportunity to review your job plan.
