The Nottingham Radiotherapy Centre cares for cancer patients with fungating tumours, open wounds and tracheotomies. The post holder will participate in the provision of the technical clinical radiation physics services undertaken by the Radiotherapy Physics section of the Medical Physics Department. This will involve:
o Construction of immobilisation, shielding and beam modification devices for patients prescribed radiotherapy treatment
oCalibration and dosimetry quality assurance of radiotherapy equipment and treatment plans
o Measurement of patient doses for Total Body Irradiation
The candidate will require previous mould room experience e.g. handling of plaster of Paris, lead, and low melting point alloy (dust, fumes, & toxic chemicals), body fluids, vibration and noise from machinery.
High levels of both written & oral communication are essential to this post with the ability to deliver or discuss difficult diagnosis and prognosis with tact, empathy, managing distressed or aggressive patients or carers/relatives. The post holder must be able to communicate accurate and sensitive information to patients, carers, and relatives as well as within their own team & colleagues.
Main duties of the job
Role Details:
To construct customised immobilisation and shielding devices for patients prescribed external beam radiotherapy treatment. A high standard of accuracy is required as these devices are used to align and set-up radiation beams. The construction techniques require taking direct patient impressions.
To design and construct other immobilisation, shielding and beam modification devices for patient treatments, dosimetry checks, etc.
To measure patient organ doses on treatment when required for Total Body Irradiation.
To assist in the calibration and dosimetry quality assurance of radiotherapy treatment equipment and plans.
To perform IMRT verification as required.
To assist in the development work in the department including involvement in clinical trials.
To participate in the training of other staff and visitors.
There may be opportunity to participate in treatment planning under the responsibility and guidance of the principal physicist in treatment planning.
Other appropriate duties, as may be required, for which the post holder has adequate training
