About the Role

As a Biomedical Scientist, you will play a critical role in providing high-quality analytical testing and reporting of haematological samples, including Blood Transfusion. Your expertise will support both the Acute Trust and Primary Care Trusts, ensuring timely and accurate results that are vital for patient diagnosis and treatment. The department operates 24/7, and you will be expected to participate in the shift rota, including nights and weekends, managing day-to-day issues independently during these hours.

Main duties of the job

Key Responsibilities

  • Sample Analysis & Reporting: Perform routine and some specialist testing of haematology and transfusion samples. Validate and authorize results, ensuring they are accurately reported to the requesting clinician. You will also be responsible for the microscopic examination of stained blood films and the subsequent reporting of findings.
  • Quality Control: Monitor and act on Quality Control (QC) samples, addressing any issues that arise. You will ensure compliance with internal and external QC schemes and take necessary corrective actions when QC results fall outside acceptable limits.
  • Equipment Maintenance: Conduct routine maintenance and troubleshooting of laboratory analyzers. You will handle minor issues independently and escalate more complex problems to the section leader.
  • Training & Supervision: Provide training and supervision to Trainee Biomedical Scientists (BMS), Medical Laboratory Assistants (MLA), and less experienced BMS staff, ensuring that all team members are up-to-date with the latest procedures and standards.
  • Communication & Coordination: Maintain effective communication with consultants, junior medical staff, and other healthcare professionals. You will also handle inquiries, provide urgent results, and ensure that patient data is handled with the utmost confidentiality.
