Job Title: Plaster Technician (Orthopaedic Practitioner)

Grade: Band 5

Location: Princess Alexandra Hospital, Hamstel Road, Harlow, Essex, CM20 1QX

Ward/Dept: Fracture and Orthopaedic Clinic

Hours: Full time - 37.5 hours per week

Shift Pattern: Monday Friday, 9am 5pm

The Role

We are looking for an experienced plaster technician to join our friendly outpatient team in the plaster room and fracture clinics, providing a comprehensive orthopaedic and trauma plaster service for the Princess Alexandra Hospital in Harlow.

The successful candidate will be a skilled plaster technician, having completed the British Casting Certificate (BCC) plaster technician course or equivalent, and work according to the Association of Orthopaedic Practitioners (AOP) and British Orthopaedic Association (BOA) code of professional practice.

To be independently responsible for the application of routine and specialist casting and select and issue appropriate walking aids, including plaster jackets, cast bracing, frog casting, hip spicas, functional bracing and splinting.

To advise and educate patients and their carers on all aspects of caring for their casts/splints and use of walking aids, in relation to their injury both with verbal and written information.

To provide emotional and practical support of parents and carers of children in long term casts for various orthopaedics and congenital conditions.

To give advice and information for patients seeking telephone advice and record where appropriate.

To attend wards and meet patients who are unfit to attend clinic for treatment.

To apply specialist casts in theatre following surgery as requested
