Job summary

Health Care Assistant are a key member of the multi-disciplinary team, carrying out direct personal care and support with activities of daily living for patients in the ward and intermediate care unit. Working in support of the qualified nurse or therapist, the job involves caring for older adults with a range of medical and nursing needs, actively contributing to the effectiveness of team working in the rehabilitation and care of older patients. The post holder has a key duty to promote patient choice, dignity and privacy in line with the core values of Birmingham Community Health Care Trust.

Main duties of the job

To assist the patients with their individual activities of daily living as required. This will include washing, dressing, bathing, oral hygiene, food and nutrition, toileting, nail care, grooming, safety and maintaining an environment conducive to sleep.

Providing support to patients and promoting independence. To contribute to the moving and handling of patients to maximize their physical comfort and to enhance their rehabilitation and independence

To carry out delegated tasks, in which competency has been assessed, relating to the monitoring of patients physical condition, including routine observations of a patients temperature, pulse and respirations and the collection of specimens.

To assist in the maintenance of the cleanliness and tidiness of the unit, adhering to infection control principles at all times.

A minimum of 6 months paid experience in an Acute Hospital or Community Hospital environment within the last 2 years

NVQ or Btec Level 2 or higher in Health and Social Care or Equivalent care qualification such as Care Certificate or Apprenticeship.

Currently studying General/Adult Nursing (Student Nurse) and completed a minimum of 12 weeks clinical placements.

*Depending on the Trust, you may require variable additional certification and skills.
