Job summary

Sundon Medical Centre has a fantastic opportunity for an enthusiastic healthcare assistant to join our existing small, hardworking, friendly team on a full-time basis, 8:30am - 4:30pm, Monday - Friday.

The role of HCA is an essential part of our GP practice team who provide the full range of NHS primary medical services.

You will be working alongside our friendly and patient focused clinical and management teams, providing an essential support function and delivering the best care to all our patients. You must work with autonomy and a high degree of confidentiality, sensitivity, discretion, empathy and tact. This is a great opportunity for some one that really wants to have an impact on people's lives, to join a supportive and patient committed team.

Main duties of the job

  • Undertakes task and duties delegated by the clinical and management teams.
  • Ordering supplies and equipment
  • Sterilisation of equipment
  • Undertaking procedures such as NHS Health checks, New patient registration checks (if requested), including completing any necessary templates and referrals within the practice.
  • Assisting with minor surgery
  • BP monitoring
  • Urinalysis
  • Phlebotomy
  • Weight monitoring
  • Ensure specimens are labelled and bagged ready for collection with the necessary paperwork completed
  • Ensure clinical waste collection runs smoothly
  • Stocking rooms
  • Ensure sharps bins are ready for collection.

About us

We are a supportive partnership, at the heart of our local community in north Luton near to the Luton and Dunstable Hospital, with a dispensing branch surgery in Harlington village. The practice currently has 5 GP partners, 2 salaried doctors, 2 nurses, HCAs and mental health liaison worker. We are a training practice that aims to deliver quality general practice and develop new models of care for our practice population.

Qualifications

Essential

  • Successful completion of the Care Certificate, or willingness to undertake, as indicated by the CQC
  • Level 3 Diploma in Health and Social Care, or equivalent

Desirable

  • A qualification in phlebotomy/venepuncture.

Experience

Essential

  • An understanding of general practice
  • Basic literacy and numeracy skills
  • Basic computer experience
  • Strong clinical skills - confidence and competence in all HCA duties required for the post
  • Experience within primary care or another healthcare setting
  • Excellent patient-facing communication and interpersonal skills;
  • Consistently confidential manner, as well as a compassionate and respectful approach, placing a high value on the dignity of patients, relatives, carers and colleagues;
