Job summary

North Avenue Surgery in Southend on Sea has an opportunity for a receptionist to join our team on a part-time basis for 9 hours per week, Thursday & Friday afternoons 2.00pm-6.30pm or Wednesday and Thursday afternoons 2.00pm 6.30pm.

In this essential front-line role at the practice, receptionists help patients to access the right services, assist with keeping health records accurate and up-to-date, and ensure that appointment bookings are well-managed.

We are looking for a receptionist to join our busy practice team and help make a positive impact on our local community. Some flexibility is required, as you will sometimes need to work additional or alternative hours to cover for colleagues.

Main duties of the job

The main responsibilities of the role include:

  • Meeting & greeting patients, the public & visitors to the practice in a friendly & courteous manner
  • Direct/signpost patients to the appropriate professional
  • Making appointments for patients with doctors/nurses
  • Filing of medical notes, letters, test results & other correspondence
  • Registering new patients
  • Opening & distributing of post
  • Issuing repeat prescriptions
  • Understanding the usage of the practice email & intranet system.
  • Assisting in the closing & securing of the building at the end of the day
  • Complying with all in house & statutory Health & Safety procedures
  • Attending practice meetings (one Tuesday a month at noon)
  • Attend training courses in house & externally
  • Carrying out general postal & photocopying duties to assist the team to disseminate information effectively
  • Providing typing & clerical support
  • Carrying out the required referral procedures relating to computer-based information regarding referrals & to input & retrieve information from an electronic data system
  • Ensuring leaflets, other written information & notice boards are kept tidy & up-to-date
  • Ensuring the proper functioning & fault reporting of central equipment used by the service e.g. photocopiers etc
  • Scanning all correspondence & file
  • Summarising & tidying all Lloyd George records received from Primary Care Support England for newly registered patients
  • Any duty that may be properly deemed by the reception manager or GPs to be part of the role of receptionist
