Job summary

The Surrey & North East Hampshire Breast Screening Service (SNEH) is part of the NHS Breast Screening Programme (NHSBSP), providing high-quality, population-based breast screening to women aged 5071 (and beyond by self-referral). Delivered from the Jarvis Breast Centre and five mobile screening units, the service supports over 210,000 women across Surrey and North East Hampshire. Working in partnership with NHS England, commissioners and local providers, the service is committed to early cancer detection, patient safety, equitable access and continuous improvement. Main duties of the job

The Clinical Director is accountable for the safe, effective and high-quality delivery of the Surrey & North East Hampshire Breast Screening Service across all sites. The role provides clinical leadership across the entire screening pathway, ensuring compliance with NHSBSP and NHS England standards. Key duties include leading and developing multidisciplinary clinical teams; overseeing clinical governance, quality assurance and patient safety; supporting education and training through the nationally recognised Training Centre; driving service transformation, innovation and pathway improvement; and representing the service at regional and national forums. The postholder will also champion equity of access, improve screening uptake and work collaboratively with NHS partners, commissioners and research bodies to enhance patient outcomes.

Key Responsibilities

Provide clinical leadership and professional supervision across the breast screening service.

Ensure delivery of safe, effective and patient-centred care in line with NHSBSP, NHS England and local quality standards.

Lead clinical governance, quality assurance, audit, risk management and patient safety processes.

Act as Clinical Lead for the Training Centre, supporting education, training and workforce development.

Support service transformation and continuous improvement, including pathway redesign and adoption of new technologies.

Represent the service at regional and national meetings and work collaboratively with NHS partners, commissioners and stakeholders.

Promote equality of access and support initiatives to improve screening uptake and reduce health inequalities.

Registered healthcare professional with significant experience in breast screening.

Eligible background as Consultant Radiologist, Associate Specialist or Consultant Radiographer.

Extensive knowledge of NHSBSP standards and clinical governance frameworks.

Experience of quality improvement, audit and service development.

Excellent communication, leadership and stakeholder engagement skills.

Desirable
