Job summary
Specialised services support people with a range of rare and complex conditions. They often involve treatments provided to patients with rare cancers, genetic disorders or complex medical or surgical conditions.
We are now seeking applications from clinical professionals who are keen and ready to take on national leadership roles in Specialised Commissioning.
Most importantly, we are seeking individuals from a broad range of clinical disciplines and backgrounds, who can bring fresh thinking and innovative ideas, informed by recent experience of clinical delivery in NHS Specialised healthcare.

Main duties of the job
The role of the National Speciality Adviser (NSA) is to provide clinical advice and leadership, supporting the work of the Medical Director for Specialised Services and the various National Clinical Directors in these respects:
- clinical advice and leadership to drive transformation of services for patients;
- clinical advice to support the commissioning of services; and
- clinical advice on ad hoc issues to support parliamentary accountability.
The role holder will:
- provide clinical leadership, advice and insight to support and promote planning and delivery of high quality specialised services, promoting integrated care, based on the needs of particular population groups.
- work with programme senior responsible owners where appropriate and other stakeholders to develop and deliver the programme’s ambitions improving the quality and value of healthcare services and ensuring programmes are clinically focused and credible.
- support policy and strategy teams in the successful design and delivery of a suite of tools to support system, professional and care pathway changes at a national and local level.
The appointment is offered on a sessional basis, to be agreed with between the team and successful candidate for a period of up to three years with an annual review of progress.
