Job summary

Specialised services support people with a range of rare and complex conditions. They often involve treatments provided to patients with rare cancers, genetic disorders or complex medical or surgical conditions.

We are now seeking applications from clinical professionals who are keen and ready to take on national leadership roles in Specialised Commissioning.

Most importantly, we are seeking individuals from a broad range of clinical disciplines and backgrounds, who can bring fresh thinking and innovative ideas, informed by recent experience of clinical delivery in NHS Specialised healthcare.

Main duties of the job

The role of the National Clinical Director (NCD) is to provide specialist clinical advice and leadership for NHS England and NHS Improvement in these respects:

· clinical advice and leadership to drive transformation of services for patients;

· clinical advice and leadership to support the commissioning of services; and

· clinical advice to support development of policy and parliamentary accountability.

The role holder will

· work with programme senior responsible owners where appropriate and other stakeholders to develop and deliver the programme’s ambitions improving the quality and value of healthcare services and ensuring programmes are clinically focused and credible.

· provide clinical leadership, advice and insight to support and promote integrated care which is based on the needs of particular population groups.

The role is offered on programmed activity basis (or equivalent for non medical clinicians), to be agreed with between the team and successful candidate for a period of up to three years with an annual review of progress.
