The NHS Long Term Plan (LTP) sets out the direction of travel for the whole NHS over a ten-year period, providing specific detail on major diseases affecting population health, including cancer; in relation to radiotherapy, the ambition is to provide: “Faster, smarter and effective radiotherapy, supported by greater networking of specialised expertise, will mean more patients are offered curative treatment, with fewer side effects and shorter treatment times”.
This ambition will be delivered through a multi-year transformation programme, which has three key aims:
- Better align incentives

- Embed research and innovation into commissioning, service planning and service delivery.
Our aim is to build a virtuous circle between quality improvement, research and innovation and rapid system adoption – so that patients can access best practice care without delay and as close to home as possible and at an affordable cost to the taxpayer. The principal purpose of the role is to provide clinical advice and leadership to the radiotherapy system through a nationally co-ordinated approach to product implementation and scorecard development as well as providing input to the NICE led evaluation process and linking to the Learning Healthcare System (LHS) and the ODNs.
The postholder will work within NHS England’s Specialised Commissioning and National Cancer Programme structures. The principal purpose of the role will be to: - provide clinical leadership and engagement to support implementation of ProKnow
- advise on provider training and opportunities for provider development;
- advise on and support scorecard development to create an integrated national quality audit programme
- advise on opportunities to maximise its potential and functionality;
- provide reports to drive improvement in plan quality
