Job summary

We're looking for someone to join and lead our Understanding Patient Data team, which an independent initiative, hosted by the NHS Confederation. You will focus on empowering individuals and communities, helping data custodians and data users do the right thing, and shape the health data policy direction. This will be done by:

  • Providing detailed policy advice and analysis about public attitudes to inform governments, NHS bodies, research organisations and civil society organisations
  • Acting as a public figure, representing UPD and sharing best practice at domestic and international events, speaking at conferences, and providing quotes to the media
  • Designing, delivering and evaluating UPDs strategy
  • Leading, shaping and managing the delivery of a programme of work
  • Working with underrepresented communities in an inclusive, ethical and sensitive way.

Main duties of the job

To be successful in this role you will be passionate and knowledgeable about the health sector and be an expert in data including digital and data policy, health data infrastructure programmes, and public engagement initiatives. As well as being a skilled influencer and negotiator you will also be an experienced in leading people and teams inclusively and effectively.

About us

Understanding Patient Data was established in 2016 by the Wellcome Trust to support better conversations about the uses of health information and moved to the NHS Confederation in April 2023. Working with patients, charities, and healthcare professionals, UPD has built a reputation as a trusted source of advice and objective, engaging information about the use of patient data in the UK for care and research.

Responsibilities

The postholder is accountable for all aspects of the UPD initiative with significant autonomy.

Specific accountabilities include:

  • Designing, delivering and evaluating UPDs strategy in an agile way within a rapidly changing and ambiguous external context
  • Leading, shaping and managing the delivery of a programme of work across four key functions (developing the health data community, commissioning research and resources, influencing and advocating, and communications and media), including developing business plans for new programmes of work which take into account finance and programme delivery targets
  • Managing an independent governance structure, made up of the UPD Steering Group, Governance Group (including NHS Confederation Trustee Board members), and funder requirements. The Steering Group contains C-suite level individuals from across the UK
  • Actively seeking, assessing and progressing new strategic work opportunities and partnerships, with a focus on generating income for UPD in an ethical way, to reduce its reliance on continuous grants
  • Leading and developing the UPD team in an inclusive and supportive way, particularly through change
  • Acting as a public figure, representing UPD and sharing best practice at domestic (UK-wide) and international events, speaking at conferences, and providing quotes to the media.
