Job summary

As a Lead Policy and Data Analyst in the NHS Confederations strategic policy team, you will lead the NHS Confederations data function, working closely with colleagues to provide key statistics and analyse data, presenting it for internal and external audiences.

Main duties of the job

The work will range from rapid data analysis to understand key issues, such as the drivers of NHS growing elective backlog, to in-depth exploration of statistics to better illustrate, for instance, the extent of inequality in health outcomes across the country.

Your work will form the basis for reports and government consultations, support fact checking of qualitative feedback from the sector, and producing accessible visualisations.

  • Have strong problem-solving abilities and experience with using health data analysis to identify patterns and trends and generate insights.
  • Are passionate about exploring the big questions the NHS and health sector are asking, for instance how the service can improve its productivity, improve patient flow and bring down waiting lists.
  • Are able to grasp complex issues quickly and to interpret and present your findings rapidly, for a variety of audiences, using data visualisation techniques.
  • Have excellent communication skills, evidence of an ability to build strong personal relationships and effective networks and are able to manage competing priorities.

Job responsibilities

The postholder will take an inquisitive and creative approach to interrogating data and use it to represent activity and performance in the NHS, uncover issues and develop solutions to improve healthcare for UK citizens.

This includes working closely with senior colleagues such as the Director of the Acute Network.

The post-holder will also manage longer term deep dive projects alongside reactive work related to emerging health policy news and scheduled statistical releases.

They will have the chance to develop both their analytical and policy skills, working with policy professionals from the NHS Confederation on a daily basis.

Specific accountabilities include:

  • Working with policy colleagues and networks to shape and supplement outputs with data, including web articles, reports, webinars and consultation responses, and help influence decision makers using robust evidence.
  • Leading on developments related to NHS data, including:
-Monitoring the NHS progress against key performance indicators, identifying (and forecasting) key trends, and communicating this clearly to members and the organisation.

-Providing rapid data analysis of regular NHS statistics releases and supporting the development of the Confederations media narrative.

-Maintaining a watching brief over health policy news stories to be able to reactively rebut or corroborate assertions in the media around statistics.

  • Leading statistical elements of deep dives and research projects, generating thought leadership and publishing data-driven articles to develop a portfolio of content on the Confederations website.
  • Supporting the organisations membership function with surveys of NHS leaders, including the design and development of research as well as analysis of the findings.
  • Line managing a more junior data analyst and maintaining oversight and of responsibility for the workload across the data function.
