What is it like to work in a GP Reception?

As a receptionist, youre often the first person a patient meets when they go to the health centre, surgery or practice. Youll book patients in for appointments, enter patients details onto IT systems and direct patients where to go. As well as dealing with patients face-to-face, receptionists often answer phones, sometimes directing calls to other staff, book appointments, answer queries. Some receptionists may combine the job with other admin duties, such as filing, photocopying, data input and word processing.

We are holding informal information sessions about this scheme via Microsoft Teams at various times on Monday 30th January. Please contact us via email if you would like to attend.

Main duties of the job

Getting to support both patients and the medical team is rewarding and fulfilling. What you do will mean a lot to our patients; youll put their mind at ease, often youll make their day!

No two days are the same. Youll be always learning, solving problems and taking the pressure off the medical team. It can be stressful at times. Theres never a dull moment!

At times patients will be upset, frustrated or angry. You will need to listen, try to understand and empathise. It helps if you can put yourselves in their shoes. You will need to work with care and attention in a fast-paced environment and multitask even when under pressure. We will expect you to be professional; honest, reliable and respectful under pressure. Confidentiality is a must.

You often need to ask patients about their problem and summarise this this accurately for the medical team. You may need to redirect patients elsewhere and do so with confidence and warmth. At times you have to think outside the box.

Youll need to enjoy working closely with others, be positive, encouraging and someone who like to have a laugh. Youll need to be able to spot when someones having a bad day and treat them sensitively. Also, it helps if you can speak up when youre having a bad day too! We also need people who are willing to work with their weakness, who welcome feedback and guidance.
