Job summary

Clinical Pharmacy in General Practice is part of an exciting programme of transformation to develop a new model of care. The Clinical Pharmacy in General Practice model is supported by the direction of national policy including the Five Year Forward View and GP Forward View where there is a need to better utilise the role of pharmacy within primary care to pro-actively help patients stay safe and well and out of hospital. As well as helping to reduce the demands on general practice.

The purpose of the role is to lead improvements to maximise safe, cost effective, best practice in prescribing to improve the quality of patient care. The post holder will help patients to get the best from their medicines by switching medications to agreed and approved protocols, improving repeat prescribing processes in General Practice, including promotion of repeat dispensing and online ordering, minimising clinical risk and aiming to reduce wasted medicines.

Main duties of the job

The PCN Clinical Pharmacy Technician will need to be committed to improving health and putting patients first. Key qualities are the ability to build effective relationships with patients, GPs, nurses, community pharmacists, hospital and practice staff, and to work effectively as part of a team. Demonstrable general pharmaceutical skills and knowledge in core areas, including long term conditions, together with a good understanding of general practice are essential

Nottingham City General Practice Alliance (NCGPA) was formed in 2016. We are Nottingham citys first GP Federation, often referred to as NCGPA or the Alliance. Our members consist of 45 NHS GP practices in Nottingham city, who cover a population of over 336,000 patients.

As a federation, we promote, support, and facilitate the collaboration of GPs and their workforce throughout our city. Examples of our work to date include developing networks whereby tasks and resources can be shared, empowering frontline practice staff to become active signposters for their patient communities and launching GP+, the citys first ever evening and weekend GP service.

The Clinical Pharmacy in General Practice model is supported by the direction of national policy including the Five Year Forward View and GP Forward View where there is a need to better utilise the role of pharmacy within primary care to pro-actively help patients stay safe and well and out of hospital. As well as helping to reduce the demands on general practice.

Pharmacy technicians play an important role, complementing clinical pharmacists, community pharmacists and other members of the PCN multi-disciplinary team. Pharmacy technicians are different to clinical pharmacists as they are not able to prescribe or make clinical decisions, instead working under supervision to ensure effective and efficient use of medicines. Pharmacy technicians core role responsibilities are to cover clinical, and technical and administrative categories.

The purpose of the role is to lead improvements to maximise safe, cost effective, best practice in prescribing to improve the quality of patient care.
