We are looking for a Consultant in General Internal Medicine / Neurology / Geriatric Medicine / Rehabilitation Medicine to join the team at the Blackheath Brain Injury Rehabilitation Centre. This role is part time - three days a week, with an additional day available at the soon to be opened Chislehurst Brain Injury Rehabilitation Unit.

Main duties of the job

The Blackheath Brain Injury Rehabilitation Centre has two dedicated units: the Thames Brain Injury Rehabilitation Unit (21 beds), is an NHSE-funded Level 1C neuro-behavioural unit for patients with complex cognitive and/or behavioural rehabilitation needs; the Heathside Neuro-disability Unit (18 beds), is an NHSE-funded Level 2A unit for patients requiring complex physical neuro-rehabilitation. The site is part of the wider Active Care Group Neuro Network (consisting of 25+ sites) nationally and collaborates with local NHS services (such as The Lishman Unit, South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust and the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery, University College London Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust). We focus on the use of clinical expertise, innovation and technology to meet patients expectations of rehabilitation goals.

Job description

Job responsibilities

There are two wards in our Blackheath site: Thames Brain Injury Rehabilitation Unit and Heathside Unit. 

Across the two wards we provide assessment, rehabilitation, support and care. 

 The centre is located at walking distance from central Greenwich with easy access to a vibrant community and local amenities, and good transport links. The service is committed to the delivery of high-quality care and there are opportunities for involvement in clinical research.

 

Key Responsibilities 

CLINICAL

    • Leading the multidisciplinary team that undertakes assessments for admissions to the service within our partner acute hospitals
    • Provide input for Spasticity and Bowel / Bladder Management.
    • Leading the multidisciplinary team in the care and treatment of our patients, including weekly ward round review
    • Attend family meetings, case review meetings and discharge planning meetings as required
    • Practise evidence-based care through national standards and guidelines
    • Provide supervision to their allocated junior doctor
    • Prepare for and participate in external reviews (CQC, Quality Network reviews); liaison with NHSE and participation in the Pan-London Specialist Rehabilitation Collaborative

MANAGEMENT

    • Attendance, and contribution to, the Neuro clinical governance meeting.
    • Participate in service development, through research, innovation and local audit.
    • Continue strong relationships with internal and external stakeholders, particularly our partners in the NHS
    • Supervision and support of the site based junior doctor.
    • Engagement in National Networks
    • Ongoing personal development through CPD and annual appraisal (and adhering to the GMC’s “Good Medical Practice”

Knowledge, Skills and Qualifications

  • MRCP (Required)
  • General Internal Medicine / Geriatric Medicine / Neurology / Rehabilitation Medicine CCT (Required – with evidence of clinical practice in areas of rehabilitation)
  • Working within an inpatient rehabilitation setting treating those with neurological or brain injury (Desirable)
  • Evidenced based practice
  • Confidence in engaging internal and external stakeholders
  • Patient centred, outcomes-based care

Experience

  • Relevant clinical experience
  • Good Leadership skills
  • Independent and self-motivated
  • Good understanding of the relevant regulatory framework, regulations and legislation
  • Strong person focused attitude
  • Excellent analytical skills
  • Good organisational skills with the ability to prioritise as appropriate
  • The ability to influence and advise at all levels
  • Strong commercial acumen
  • Ability to engage with external stakeholders

Communication

  • Regular contact with a wide range of both internal and external stakeholders, requiring highly developed and well-practiced communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to be flexible in communication style depending on the audience and subject both verbally and written.

Working environment 

  • Requirement for 22.5 hours a week (part time) with an additional 7.5 hours available at a local Level 2 rehabilitation site (Chislehurst).
