Autoclave Operative and Waste Processor

Job summary

Media Services at UKHSA comprises of two sections:

  1. Central Technical Discard (CTD) is responsible for laboratory waste management and the sterilisation of products and consumables on the Colindale site. This service involves the collection of contaminated Category 2 laboratory waste from agreed central locations, its transportation to the Media Services central autoclave suite and its thermal destruction. There is also a service for the processing of Category 3 waste with dedicated laboratories. The treated material is then processed; glass and other re-cycleable material is washed, in the department's wash-up area, and waste material for disposal off-site is processed and/or packaged appropriately for collection.
  2. Production and Dispatch is responsible for the production of ready-to-use culture media and ancillary reagents and its distribution to laboratories for application in public health, clinical microbiology, food microbiology or for industrial uses. The team also provides a distributor function for the ordering, receipt and distribution of commercial pre-poured media plates required by laboratories on-site.

Main duties of the job

The role will have key responsibilities in the processing of laboratory waste using large scale (850L) autoclaves and the downstream activities following sterilisation ie waste clearing, glass washing, glass clearing as well as keeping a clear audit trial of the material processed.

The work involves a lot of manual handling activities. The role will also involve the washing and sterilisation of tools (cutlery, blenders etc) used by laboratories in food sample processing.

  • Assist laboratory staff with the processing of untreated Category 3 laboratory waste.
  • Ensure collection points are stocked with empty discard bins for laboratory collection.
  • Following sterilisation, sort treated waste into waste streams and clear according to procedures.
  • Collect sample processing equipment ie cutlery, funnels, blenders from the Food, Water & Environmental Laboratory for washing and sterilisation.
  • Perform manual washing of glassware, quality checking of glassware and restocking of glassware stock ready for use in production.
  • Process sterilisation requests from laboratories using autoclaves or hot air ovens.
  • Check items in use, or on receipt, are correct and in good condition.
  • Keep full and accurate records of work performed
  • Ensure working areas are maintained ie kept clean and clutter free.

  • Education to GCSE level (or equivalent qualification) with Maths and English (Grade C or above), or equivalent experience in aligned field (i.e. food production environment, pharmaceutical production environment or healthcare environment ie hospital sterile services)
  • Suitable relevant experience of either laboratory work, sterile services or production environment
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Able to work as part of a team
  • Able to follow processes and procedures
  • Able to work to deadlines
  • Accurate record keeping using both written and electronic means
  • Able to undertake regular Manual Handling activities. This includes moving and lifting loads of approx. 10kg
  • Working experience with software packages, including Microsoft Office

  • Experience of operating large-scale equipment ie autoclave / similar equipment

Selection Process

This vacancy will be assessed using a competency-based framework which will assess your qualifications, knowledge and experience and / or skills and abilities outlined in the essential criteria.
