Job summary

Virology, delivered from the Manchester Royal Infirmary site employs approximately 100 staff and has a workload exceeding 1,000,000 specimens per year. The department embraces a modern clinical virology service combining some traditional methodologies with a range of laboratory automation.

The post holder will act as a laboratory assistant to provide support to the scientific team providing services to patients and clients as an aid to clinical diagnosis.

You will be expected to work 37.5 hours, flexible between the hours of 8 a.m. - 8 p.m. Monday to Sunday

There are three positions available: 2 x permanent roles and one fixed term position for 12 months. Roles we be offered in merit order.

Main duties of the job

  • Sample receipt and handing
  • Sample preparation and reagent preparation following protocols
  • Clerical duties, including PC use, data entry, phone enquiries
  • Provide results service to wards, GPs, and other hospitals
  • Deal with patients, visitors, and deliveries
  • Monitor and maintain appropriate stock levels, receipt of deliveries and preparation of orders
  • Clean and disinfect equipment and laboratory areas
  • Perform manual, semi-automated and automated tests according to protocols
  • Disposal of patient samples in accordance with relevant guidelines
  • Autoclaving of waste material and patient samples (moderate lifting)
  • Portering duties, exchange of gas cylinders (moderate lifting)
  • Work in a safe manner in accordance with Laboratory Health and Safety policies and procedures
  • Process specimens, sub culturing of specimens, clean and maintain equipment, assist BMS staff in analytical techniques, and use of automated equipment within Containment Level 3 laboratory
  • Use of automated equipment and its cleaning and maintenance within Containment Level 2 laboratories
  • Participate in Quality Assurance and Quality Control activities and assist the department in maintaining UKAS accreditation
  • Participate in audit processes, drug trials, research projects as required
  • Assist in the production of bacteriological culture media
  • Occasionally work under remote supervision of a Registered Biomedical Scientist following defined SOP/protocols and refer non routine issues to their supervisor

We are seeking an enthusiastic and highly motivated Medical Laboratory Assistant. Previous experience in a similar role although advantageous is not essential as all necessary training will be given to the post holder. The post holder will work as part of the laboratory team, providing a high level of microbiological analysis to provide patients with the highest level of diagnosis and treatment.The laboratory is accredited by UKAS (ISO15189 standard)We actively encourage CPD activities.

The department requires staff to support the department in delivering a comprehensive Virology service over 7 days. Staff may be required to work a variety of shifts, including weekends, throughout the 24-hour period if appropriate to the post.

The laboratory has a friendly atmosphere with a good team spirit and offers the opportunity for you to develop personally and professionally. The department is a designated IBMS training laboratory, has an extensive quality system in operation and is fully accredited.
