Job summary

The Food, Water and Environmental (FW&E) Microbiology Laboratories are specialist microbiology laboratories within the UKHSA. Based in 3 sites across the country, the laboratories are geographically well placed to work with local authorities in order to protect the public from health threats posed by contaminated food, water and the environment.

The London FW&E Laboratory provides a microbiology testing and advisory service to Local Authorities, Port Health Authorities, hospitals, and commercial clients in London. The laboratory accredited to ISO 17025 and is recognised as an Official Food Control Laboratory for the microbiological examination of food and foodstuffs within the EU.

The postholder will lead and coordinate the provision of professional administrative services within the laboratory and provide a Personal Assistant service to the Laboratory Manager and Unit Head. To be responsible for the supervision and training of other administrative staff within the laboratory. Work effectively with the Business Support Manager to ensure Business plans and services are implemented.

Location

This is a office based role located at Colindale, London NW9 5HT.

Main duties of the job

The job holder will be required to carry out the following responsibilities, activities and duties:

  • To lead and coordinate the provision of professional administrative and secretarial support to senior staff in the laboratory
  • To provide a Personal Assistant service to the Laboratory Manager and Unit Head
  • To be responsible for receiving and directing telephone calls from health professionals, customers, other agencies and members of the public and where able to deal with enquiries regarding the laboratory's activities
  • To be a member of the Laboratory Management Team and to organise the meeting schedule, prepare agendas and relevant papers and produce minutes and action points for the meetings
  • To be responsible for maintaining records of sickness absence and annual leave on all laboratory staff and to provide data on request
  • To be responsible for organising and maintaining a confidential electronic filing system within the laboratory office
  • To assist in the production of correspondence, reports and scientific publications when necessary
  • To supervise the laboratory transport services required to support our customers delivery to our customers.
