The VEDC is a world-class facility that conducts laboratory research to support all stages of vaccine and therapeutic development, from discovery to licensure on a range of emerging health security threats. The Clinical Evaluation team in VDEC played a critical role in the COVID-19 response and is now expanding its scope and impact. Main duties of the job

As an Assay Scientist, you will provide extensive microbiology and laboratory knowledge and be responsible for the delivery of the immunological assays within the Clinical Evaluation Team on a range of UK Government COVID Vaccine unit and commercially funded projects concerned with testing of clinical trial samples for various vaccine development. Job responsibilities

Responsibilities section:

The job holder will be required to carry out the following responsibilities, activities and duties:

  • Support PTL to implement and utilise a range of methods/assays/techniques in support of all activities associated with the vaccine task force team aimed to ensure project targets are met.
  • Take responsibility for the provision of reagents and consumables required for the assay operations.
  • Take responsibility for supervising and maintenance of equipment and facilities as required by project team.
  • Take responsibility for supervising a Containment Level 2 and 3 laboratory.
  • Take responsibility for the supervision and training of junior staff allocated to the project as required.
  • Ensure accurate documentation and tracking of samples and data and laboratory records and correctly follow SOPs without deviation.
  • Provide reports through analysis of data using software and databases as necessary for preparation of presentations and reporting.
  • Assist the Project Team Leader to identify, evaluate and adapt new technologies where appropriate and to ensure that the project operates to a high scientific standard using current methods.
  • Work to a high-quality standard and provide input and troubleshooting for investigations.
  • To perform any other duties required by the Line manager commensurate with grade

  • Excellent understanding and experience of safe working practices in a lab environment
  • Experience of delivering duties to meet team objectives within set timelines
  • Demonstratable knowledge and experience of having worked in a regulated environment (i.e., GxP, ISO)
  • Experience of lab supervision and/or risk assessment

Desirable

  • MSc in relevant area
  • Experience and knowledge of specialist technique(s) i.e., working at containment level 3, immunology assays, cell-based bioassays
  • Experience of training others and supervising junior members of staff.
