Job summary

The Vaccines and Countermeasures Response Department is part of the National Infection Service Directorate. It is concerned with the procurement and supply of vaccines for the Immunisation Programme and the national stockpiles, vaccine agreements and storage and distribution requirements for pandemic flu preparedness and emergency response planning. This includes the budget management and financial accounting in relation to these arrangements.

The Vaccine Operations team deals with all aspects of the procurement and distribution of vaccines, immunoglobulins, antivenoms and antitoxins for the national immunisation programme and for urgent use within the NHS, across the 4 nations of the UK.

The role of Vaccine Supply Operations Lead is a new post to support the operations, providing accurate and timely reports for a range of stakeholders during what is expected to be the UK's largest vaccination programme which will be delivered at pace and will be a key Ministerial priority. The role will be directly responsible for the daily operational management of all covid related products, ensuring their timely distribution across the UK, Crown Dependencies, and Overseas Territories.

Main duties of the job

  • Reviewing the inbound vaccine schedule(s), working closely with our distributor to ensure the safe receipt of products and securing extra storage capacity where needed.
  • Leading the work on ordering strategies for Crown Dependencies and Overseas Territories Enabling a steady flow of vaccines to support the running of UK clinical trials.
  • Leading a team of 2 Supply Operations Managers.
  • Working with the Reporting Lead to prepare daily reporting metrics for Ministers and other stakeholders.
  • Identify, discuss and action own professional performance and training / development needs with your line manager through appraisal / individual development plan. Attending internal / external training events
  • To participate in all mandatory training as required, i.e. fire safety, information governance and all other mandatory training.

The VCR team will play a pivotal role in the delivery of programmes in the prevention and treatment of COVID-19, ensuring the availability of treatments where these have been found to have a positive impact, and for managing the supply and distribution of vaccines against COVID-19.

Essential Criteria:

  • Experience of successfully operating in a politically sensitive environment
  • Experience of managing risks and reporting.
  • Ability to analyse complex facts and situations and develop a range of options, including stock management data
  • Strong problem solving skills and ability to respond to sudden unexpected demands, and deliver on time
  • Ability to build constructive working and influential relationships internally and externally
  • Strategic thinking ability to anticipate and resolve problems before they arise.
