Job responsibilities
This role involves the collation, analysis, interpretation and presentation of public health information. You will be required to have good working knowledge of the practical application of analytical methods, be highly numerate and have good communication skills.
SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES
- Planning, managing and delivering on a range of projects requiring potentially complex analytic input, including negotiating and agreeing the most appropriate data output, initiating and planning workloads and setting delivery timescales.
- Analyse and interpret complex data using tools such as SQL, R, Python, and undertake statistical analyses such as significance testing and correlation analyses
- Development of dashboards for data visualisation using tools such as Power BI
- Participate in the business as usual production of data products, such as the UKHSA data dashboard, including running data pipelines and quality assuring outputs
- Take a lead in developing and promoting quality assurance procedures. Check for data anomalies prior to and during analyses and perform corrective actions as required, including liaising with internal and external data providers.
- Exercise judgement in interpreting statistics appropriately, especially where the data indicates a negative or contentious situation.
- Communicate analytical/statistical matters to non-analytical/statistical professionals.
- Attending local and national meetings with key stakeholders including health intelligence analysts, health improvement and protection colleagues, and partner organisations for UKHSA.
- Ensuring personal and promoting team compliance with corporate policies in relation to security, confidentiality and release of information.

Essential Criteria:
- Educated to first- or upper-second-class honours degree level or equivalent relevant experience in a numerate discipline such as statistics, mathematics, sciences, social sciences, economics, geography or similar.
- Experience of coding (e.g. SQL, R, Python) and familiarity with data science elements e.g. working with version control / code sharing platforms
- Experience of data visualisation (e.g. Power BI)
- Experience of quality assuring data and analytical products, including quality assuring outputs and introducing and improving quality assurance procedures
- Experience in the use of statistical methods for analysing data sets
- Experience of written and oral communication and interpretation of complex analysis to a varied group of stakeholders
- Demonstrated capabilities to manage own workload and make informed decisions in the absence of required information, working to tight and often changing timescales
- Experience of building strong relationships and encouraging collaborative working both within and outside of own team
- Knowledge of data security and confidentiality issues
Desirable criteria:
- An interest and enthusiasm for public health issues and information
- Experience of working with multiple sets of health-related data and information systems in health-related organisations
- Line management experience and/or knowledge of the principles of good line management
Selection Process
Stage 1: Application & Sift
This vacancy is using Success Profiles, and will assess your Behaviours and Experience.
As part of the application process you will be asked to provide a Personal Statement / Statement of Suitability in no more than 1000 words. We will be assessing essential criteria/ desirable criteria at sift.
This should outline your skills, experience, and achievements, providing evidence of your suitability for the role, with particular reference to the Experience criteria or the essential criteria (outlined in the person specification section).
You will also be asked to provide information within the Employer/ Activity history section of the application form. This is equivalent to the information you would provide on a CV, setting out your career history. This will be used in the sifting process and will be scored
Stage 2: Panel Interview
All applicants that progress to interview will be assessed on behaviours and technical skills through Success Profiles. Applicants will be asked to complete a technical task prior to the interview and prepare a 5-minute presentation on the results which will be delivered and discussed during the interview.

Reserve List:
Candidates who pass the interview criteria but are not offered a post will be kept on a reserve list for 12 months and may be contacted if similar roles become available.
If you are interviewed for the post and do not meet the required threshold for the specified grade, your application may be assessed against a similar, lower grade role and you may be offered the post should one be available.
DBS - People working with government systems must complete Basic Personnel Security Standard (BPSS) checks which includes a disclosure and barring security check. Successful candidates must meet the security requirements before they can be appointed. The level of security needed for this role is BPSS however there may be a requirement for this role to be SC cleared and you should familiarise yourself with the criteria of security clearance.
