Job summary
At the United Kingdom Health Security Agency (UKHSA) our mission is to provide health security for the nation by protecting from infectious disease and external hazards. This senior scientist virology post will provide molecular and recombinant virology support to the Virology & Pathogenesis (V&P) group, as directed by the senior project team leader. In particular, the post holder will lead the establishment of in-house SARS-CoV-2 pseudovirus production in support of the Vaccine Task Force (VTF).
This opportunity is initially a fixed term position until January 2025 supported by the BEIS. However, the suitable candidate will be encouraged to develop their career within the V&P network at UKHSA and linked laboratories.
This is a Fixed Term Contract until 31/01/2025.
Main duties of the job
The job holder will be required to carry out the following responsibilities, activities and duties:
- Establish SARS-CoV-2 pseudovirus production for use in COVID-19 PNA assays.
- Ensure pseudovirus production and performance meets quality requirements of the VTF.
- Lead in the development of additional PV capability as required.
- Lead in the development (and roll out to others in the organisation) of related neutralisation assays.
- Provide reports through analysis of data using software and databases as necessary, to meet project targets and for preparation of presentations and publications.
- Implement and utilise a range of methods/assays/techniques in support of all activities associated with the project aimed to ensure project targets are met.
- Take responsibility for the supervision and training of junior staff allocated to the project as required.
- To perform any other duties required by the Line manager commensurate with grade.
- To ensure that the project team undertakes work in accordance with applicable UKHSA Safety and Quality systems.
