You will work in one of the Culture Collections Unit, which is part of the Reference Service Unit. You will mainly be based at the Porton site, but you will also need to travel to the Colindale site. The high quality biological resources (Such as bacteria, viruses, fungi and cell cultures) from the Culture Collections Unit are used and cited by laboratories around the world for various purposes, such as developing and testing new techniques, drugs, vaccines and diagnostics

Main duties of the job

As a Human Tissue Cell Culture scientist you will provide cell culture and biobanking expertise to researchers and diagnosticians within the field. You will also ensure that incoming cultures and data are up to date and relevant for current and emerging diseases and Technologies.

Responsibilities section:

The job holder will be required to carry out the following responsibilities, activities and duties:

  • Plan, implement and utilise a range of methods/assays/techniques in support of all activities associated with the operation of ECACC to ensure cell banking and quality control targets are met
  • Take responsibility for the provision of reagents and consumables required for the ECACC project area
  • Assist the ECACC team to identify, evaluate and adapt new technologies where appropriate and to ensure that all activities operate to a high scientific standard using current methods
  • Take responsibility for the supervision and training of junior staff allocated to the ECACC as required
  • Provide reports through the interpretation and analysis of data using software and databases as necessary, to meet ECACC targets and for preparation of presentations and publications
  • Support and participate in external training courses provided by ECACC
  • To perform any other duties required by the Line manager commensurate with grade
  • To ensure that the project team undertakes work in accordance with the UKHSAs Code of Safety Practice and to work within any Quality and Regulatory Systems that are applicable to the site or the service (e.g. Human Tissue Act).
