Job responsibilities
The job holder will be required to carry out the following responsibilities, activities and duties:
- Undertake assessments of the consequences of releases of radioactivity to the environment.
- Contribute and take responsibility for the development, maintenance and/or application of mathematical models and tools for estimating the consequences of releases of radioactivity to the environment.
- Perform research and development work in support of environmental assessments and the provision of radiological protection advice.
- Manage small projects and parts of larger projects.
- Contribute to and promote activities for sharing skills and knowledge, both within the Department and more widely.
- Contribute to the identification of knowledge gaps and contract opportunities, negotiate technical aspects of straightforward contracts and draft technical specifications for projects
- In the event of an emergency, the job holder will participate in the environmental or radiation incident response and recovery as a category 1 responder. Training is provided through regular emergency exercises.

Essential
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team
- Degree educated in either: Maths or science-related degree
- Ability to prepare written communications and oral presentations for dissemination to a broad range of stakeholders as required
- Good time management and ability to work to tight deadlines
- Good organisational skills and ability to work unsupervised
- Experience of giving presentations at meetings and in more formal settings, e.g. symposia
Desirable
- Experience of programming for scientific applications
- Comprehension of the principles of radiological protection
- Experience and expertise in carrying out environmental assessments
- Proven ability to identify and solve problems in own work areas
Selection process details
STAGE 1 - APPLICATION & SIFT:
You will be required to complete an application form. This will be assessed in line with the advertised essential criteria please do provide evidence of how you meet this.
If you are successful at this stage, you will progress to an interview.
STAGE 2 INTERVIEW
This stage will involve an in-person interview alternative arrangements can be made if needed.
Candidates will be invited to interview to discuss previous experience and professional competence in relation to the criteria set out in the Person Specification. Candidates will also be required to prepare a 5-minute presentation to be followed by a Q&A segment. The presentation specification will be designed to assess each candidates experience in line with the requirements of the role. Full details will be provided prior to the interview.

Security clearance level requirement
Successful candidates must pass a disclosure and barring security check. Successful candidates must meet the security requirements before they can be appointed.
