Are you a graduate in physics, mathematics, environmental sciences or computer sciences? Do you want to use your skills to protect the public from radiation hazards? If so, you might be interested in joining our team of radiological assessment experts at RCE.

Main duties of the job

As a radiological protection scientist, you will develop and apply environmental assessment models to estimate the exposure of humans and the environment to radioactivity released to the environment. You will also work with software that we have developed and sold commercially and provide training to the users of these products. You will publish your research findings in journals, reports and other publications, and collaborate with Government, industry and international organisations such as the IAEA, ICRP, NEA and UNSCEAR. You will also participate in various activities organised by these organisations.

We are looking for candidates who have a strong background in scientific disciplines, who are interested in radiation protection and are keen to learn new skills and methods. You will also need to have good communication and teamwork skills, as well as a high level of initiative and creativity.

Job description

Job responsibilities

The job holder will be required to carry out the following responsibilities, activities and duties:

  • Undertake assessments of the consequences of releases of radioactivity to the environment.
  • Contribute and take responsibility for the development, maintenance and/or application of mathematical models and tools for estimating the consequences of releases of radioactivity to the environment.
  • Perform research and development work in support of environmental assessments and the provision of radiological protection advice.
  • Manage small projects and parts of larger projects.
  • Contribute to and promote activities for sharing skills and knowledge, both within the Department and more widely.
  • Contribute to the identification of knowledge gaps and contract opportunities, negotiate technical aspects of straightforward contracts and draft technical specifications for projects
  • In the event of an emergency, the job holder will participate in the environmental or radiation incident response and recovery as a category 1 responder. Training is provided through regular emergency exercises.
