Job summary

We are recruiting for a Port Health Executive Officer for the Health Control Unit. The unit's primary functions are to carry out risk assessments for all health protection related incidents at Heathrow Airport as well as providing Medical Inspector services to Border Force under the Immigration Act 1971. Primarily, this is to provide advice to Border Force on the health status of migrants as to whether they meet the rules for admission to the UK.

The post holder will need to assist the Operations Manager and the Port Medical team in providing support for all operational aspects of the Health Control Unit. You will need to work on a 24/7, 365-day rota consisting of 12-hour shifts as required (allowances provided for overtime and unsociable hours), have a pleasant telephone manner, and a friendly positive demeanour. The successful candidate should also be able to remain calm and diligent under pressure.

This role is being offered on a full-time basis.

The successful candidate is expected to be on site for the shifts. Unfortunately, because of the nature of the job, hybrid or fully remote working will not be offered.

Main duties of the job

The job holder will be required to carry out the following responsibilities, activities and duties:

  • To maintain direct daily contact with duty Medical Officers in order to support them in their duties.
  • Administer the Port Medical Inspection national telephone service and pass on the information to the appropriate leads.
  • Screening of incoming telephone calls and triage to appropriate people/areas.
  • Assist with the monitoring of the pre-entry screening programme generic mailbox, liaising with unit staff to obtain relevant information, and sending responses to queries in a timely manner as directed in response to queries as appropriate.
  • To cope with varied situations and pressures using tact, diplomacy and understanding with a clear understanding of data protection and client confidentiality
  • To provide a high standard of secretarial/administrative support to the Port Health team. This will include word-processing, typing, drafting letters on routine and others matters, memos, e-mails, agendas for meetings. Attending meetings for the purpose of minute taking.
  • To assist Port Health team members as necessary in coordinating meeting schedules, booking courses, organising venues, hospitality etc.
  • To be pro-active and participate as a full member of the team contributing to ideas and team events as appropriate.
