Job summary
The Rare and Imported Pathogens team are currently recruiting to a permanent SEO Senior Scientist post to provide analytical and intellectual expertise to support the delivery of a range of internal and external research and surveillance projects. The post is a predominantly desk-based scientific research role.
The Rare & Imported Pathogens team provides the clinical and scientific input to the Rare and Imported Pathogens Laboratory (RIPL), delivering specialist advice and frontline molecular and serological diagnostic testing for a wide range of unusual viral and bacterial infections including: viral haemorrhagic fevers (e.g. Ebola, Congo Crimean haemorrhagic fever); arthropod-borne diseases caused by viruses such as Dengue, Chikungunya, West Nile and hantaviruses; bacterial diseases including rickettsial infections, leptospirosis, Q fever, anthrax, tularemia and Lyme disease. RIPL operates the national Imported Fever Service and since June 2012 has operated the national Lyme disease testing service. RIPL is a WHO collaborating laboratory for anthrax, VHFs and arboviruses.

*Please be aware that this role can only be worked from within the UK and not overseas. Relocation expenses are not available.*
Main duties of the job
The job holder will be required to carry out the following responsibilities, activities and duties:
- Gather, analyse and evaluate quantitative and qualitative data and research evidence from a range of sources to evaluate services, identify strategic priorities, make recommendations for service improvement and strengthen the evidence base around the public health impact of emerging and vector-borne infections.
- Manage the technical and analytical aspects of work in the group.
- Be responsible for the quality and security of data collected, stored, extracted and transferred.
- Build and maintain reference libraries using reference management software and conduct literature and evidence reviews in support of internal and external projects.
- Synthesise information to produce concise reports and guidelines for uptake by national and international agencies and to inform clinical decision making and patient management.
- Contribute to writing and editing scientific publications related to the post holder's area of scientific work.
- Build effective relationships with key stakeholders and partners.
