Job summary

The UKHSA North West Region is made up of health protection consultants and practitioners, surveillance scientists, emergency preparedness professionals and business operations staff, operating from three North West sites.

We are recruiting to an exciting new post of Environmental Public Health Scientist who will work as part of a dynamic analytical community and be responsible for delivering an effective and innovative health intelligence service for environmental public health (EPH) within a designated geography. The post holder will work collaboratively with emergency preparedness (EPRR) colleagues over COMAH site exercise tests, liaising with relevant local regional and national colleagues from UKHSA e.g. RCE, Field Service and partner agencies such as the Environment Agency (EA). They will develop a range of approaches EPH practice, such as Source-Pathway-Receptor analysis of EPH situations in a systematic way from the data available, to identify gaps to enhance EPH services and develop excellence in analytical services.

Main duties of the job

  • Deliver a high-quality data analytics service on EPH to health protection teams (HPTs) using extensive knowledge of data and excellent analytical and technical skills
  • Build and manage collaborative relationships with UKHSA (HPT, RCE and Field Service) and OHID (Knowledge and Intelligence) colleagues
  • Work closely with multi-agency decision-making groups, such as LRF, LHRPs, the NHS, local government and other sectors (EA, UU) and lead regional EPH network (as appropriate) to ensure North West EPH service needs are understood, relevant data is analysed and intelligence produced to underpin EPH decision-making process
  • Oversee the information and data management to support EPH incidents
  • Ensure UKHSA HPT's compliance with corporate and regulatory policies in relation to security, confidentiality and release of information related to EPH situations
  • Plan, manage and deliver a portfolio of EPH projects, juggle competing priorities and meet tight deadlines
  • May support and manage staff and be responsible for day-to-day EPH work assigned to the team
  • Support, motivate and develop people within the team
