The Vaccine Task Force group, at UKHSA Porton, is based in a new world-class research facility dedicated to the development and testing of new COVID-19 vaccines. Research undertaken includes clinical testing to support regulatory licensing of new COVID-19 vaccines and research to inform government decisions on vaccination policies.

Home to ground-breaking new technology vital to tackling both COVID-19 and a broad range of emerging health security threats, the facility houses new equipment which will improve the speed and capacity to evaluate COVID-19 vaccines and the potential risks from Variants of Concern as they arise.

Main duties of the job

Laboratory Assistants support the scientists to ensure efficient delivery of data to support vaccine licensure and roll out. The successful candidate will be educated to GCSE level Grade 4/C or NVQ Level 2 in Maths and English with a keen interest in science. It would be beneficial if the candidate had experience working in a laboratory environment on regulated studies/projects (GCP / ISO9001:2015). The role will require an understanding of safe working practices; with experience of working in a health care environment.

This post is initially offered as a fixed term but may be extended beyond the advertised end date subject to budgetary considerations.

Role is based at UKHSA Porton Down. Due to the nature of the vacancy, the postholder will need to be based at the Laboratory 5 days per week.

The job holder will be required to carry out the following responsibilities, activities and duties:

This role will include routine laboratory work such as sample receipt, retrieval and processing, reagent preparation, waste management, laboratory housekeeping and maintenance and ensuring the work is carried out to high scientific, safety and quality standard.

Perform a range of tasks as directed by line manager/supervisor:

  • Receive, process and support testing on a range of clinical samples.
  • Operate a range of laboratory equipment and instruments, e.g., centrifuges, analyzers, microbiology safety cabinets.
  • Work to Good Clinical Practice- follow standard operating procedures and record information accurately.
  • Ensure laboratory equipment and instruments are suitably checked, maintained, and calibrated and that documentation relevant to the laboratory is kept up to date.
  • Operate, maintain, clean, and disinfect laboratory equipment safely and comply with waste disposal protocols.
  • Maintain clean safe and tidy working environment and follow appropriate risk assessments.
  • Monitor laboratory stocks and supplies and support ordering and inventory management.
  • Undergo any training requirements as required for the post.
  • Provide support for sample reception, storage, and retrieval.
  • Support lab waste collection and processing.
