New entrants to the Civil Service are expected to start on the minimum of the pay band.

The internal roles rules apply to existing Civil Servants, i.e. level transfers move on current salary or the pay range minimum, transfers on promotion move to new pay range minimum or receive 10% increase. Either case is determined by whichever is the highest.

Main duties of the job

As a senior Data Architect, you will be leading and working closely with other data architects, data modellers and data analysts to analyse, plan, design and steer implementation of our evolving data and analytics estate.

To ensure success as a data platform architect you should have substantial knowledge of how to optimise our data architecture in terms of efficiency, compliancy, agility and simplicity and understand the impact of poor access to high quality data.

You should have knowledge across multiple different data domains including on premise and cloud data architecture, data flows and interfaces, data management such as data quality, lineage, catalogues, business intelligence and analytics

You should be skilled at understanding the big picture, whilst attending to detail, and able to obtain a broad level of understanding across multiple areas of our complex data estate. Should be able to use this knowledge along with data architecture skills to understand the impact of changes as our data systems, feeds and data products evolve and guide implementation teams

You should be able to engage with a wide range of technical, specialist and leadership roles in order to analyse, document and guide optimisation of our data estate

About us

We are looking for a Data Architect to work within the SGSAP Project which is part of the Surveillance Systems & Bioinformatics Programme for 2022/ 23, one of three change programmes led by the Genomics Division and the Data Operations Directorate which collectively will transform data and analytics in UKHSA.

UKHSA's immediate and most important priority is to continue the response to the COVID-19 pandemic. In the longer term, UKHSA will build on the legacy of the COVID-19 response to ensure resilient and scalable infrastructure to secure the UK in the strongest position to protect the public from future threats to health.

Data Operations

The UKHSA Data Operations Directorate provides strategic leadership and oversight for developing and managing a common and bespoke suite of performant, modern, secure, data and analytical tools, services, platforms, and applications, ensuring access to high quality data and analytics services, internally and externally.

Surveillance Systems and Bioinformatics

Based within the Data Operations Directorate, the Surveillance Systems and Bioinformatics Division works across the organisation and with external partners to lead the design, development, maintenance and delivery of surveillance systems, with a focus on accessibility, interoperability and improving health security outcomes.

You able to work within the context of well understood architecture and can identify and govern against appropriate patterns
  • Data Platforms Change and Migration You are skilled at identifying and analysing the impact of change across our complex data estate, and understanding the complexities of migrating, retiring and introducing new data platforms and data flows
  • Data Management: You understand the concepts and ways of delivering cloud-based data management capabilities such as data quality, metadata, data catalogues, lineage etc and have an in depth understanding of one or more tool sets
  • Data governance. You can evolve and define data governance. You can take responsibility for supporting and collaborating around wider governance. You can assure and integrate data services to meet the needs of multiple business services. You can work proactively to ensure the organisation designs architecture that considers data.
  • Data innovation. You can understand the impact on the organisation of emerging trends in data tools, analysis techniques and data usage.
  • Data modelling. You can understand the concepts and principles of data modelling. You can produce relevant data models across multiple subject areas.
