UKHSAs Health Protection teams provide a central part of how UKHSA works with partners to deliver its first function to protect the public's health. They deliver this through a range of core functions including surveillance and monitoring, operational support and advice, education, training and research.

The post holder will undergo a programme of on-going development and education to build on existing knowledge and develop skills to provide specialist health protection advice and meet competencies required to undertake the role. The post holder will be part of the multi-disciplinary team contributing to the day-to-day provision of the Port Health function and deliver the duties as mentioned in the Job Description.

About us

The main functions of Health Control Unit :

  1. To provide Medical Inspector services to Border Force under the Immigration Act 1971. Primarily, this is to provide advice to Border Force on the health status of migrants as to whether they meet the rules for admission to the UK. The major areas for advice are infectious diseases and mental health. Additionally, there is a requirement to advise Border Force on the cost of medical or surgical procedures for those who are seeking to enter the UK for treatment.
  2. To provide first line help desk support for the overseas TB pre-entry screening programme.
  3. To provide a national Port Medical Inspection telephone service to all ports in the UK.
  4. To provide medical officer services under the Public Health (Aircraft) Regulations 1979.
