To take a lead role in the quality management system and manage the work of the quality team in UKHSA Birmingham ensuring that the quality system in place at UKHSA Birmingham is maintained and continually developed to ensure continued compliance with all required standards, regulations and guidelines.
Main duties of the job
- Take day to day responsibility for the effective management of the quality system in place at UKHSA Birmingham and acting independently to make decisions on quality-related matters
- Manage the Quality Team at UKHSA Birmingham.
- Fulfill the responsibilities of a quality manager, as explicitly defined in international quality standards, on behalf of self and team.

The Public Health Laboratory Birmingham is part of the Directorate of Laboratory Medicine at University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust. It is one of the largest microbiology laboratories in the West Midlands NHS Region and is the Regional Public Health Laboratory of Public Health England. It is fully accredited with United Kingdom Accreditation Service (UKAS) and the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC).
The department undertakes a wide range of routine, specialist microbiological and molecular investigations.

Job responsibilities
- Be responsible for ensuring the provision and dissemination of quality information throughout UKHSA Birmingham.
- Be responsible for maintenance of UKAS accreditation and other relevant accreditation as required for UKHSA Birmingham. To collaborate with other NIS clinical laboratory quality in fulfilment of this responsibility.
- To chair and organize the departments quarterly quality meetings and any other associated meetings.
- To be a member of the Specialist Microbiology Services Regional Microbiology network Quality Managers Group.
- Conduct and participate in audit processes, clinical trial, research and development projects as required by Regional Head of Operations and Consultant Medical staff.
- Advise on quality issues across UKHSA Birmingham and ensure all staff are aware of changes to quality system.
- Investigate clinical and non-clinical incidents in relation to the department and report to the Regional Head of Operations / Laboratory Manager in accordance with UKHSA / Trust incident reporting policy. Ensure that effective, immediate and follow-up actions are taken and fully documented.
